Speaking at the Atlanta Independent Film Festival, director Mark Vadik said it is based around a couple of real serial killers as far as certain behaviors.
Such as, Cyrus' thought processing (justifying the murders), false reality creation (making the girls that reminded him of his wife behave like her), and his need to see the victims fear in their eyes (a lot of serial killers talk about this).
