I didn't understand the scene with the bar boys

Did the Thai women, after getting off their own shift, go to a form of male brothel? At the bar I was unsure if the women were paying for their company or not. Also, there were those couple shots of the men grooming their hair, similar to the same scenes where the women did the same in the beginning.

Yeah it's a host club, women go there to pay for the company of the men and hang out. They have a lot of them in Japan and most of the time the clients will fall in love with one of the guys and spend all there money on them. There was an interesting documenty on Netflix called "The great happiness space" that is a great insight into they're lives.

Yeah, especially when those girls are good looking and can get any guy they want without paying them...

Because it's almost practically legal in their country the perspective is different. In the U.S., the attitude about sex is so puritan yet full of hypocrisy. We preach abstinence and marriage and frown on adultery and pre-marital sex but sex crimes of all manner are at an all time high. Adultery is high at every social level even higher among supposed Christians. No man here would ever admit to using a prostitute though many use them in secret. I patronized them for 25 years, even when I was married. Not proud of it.

In Thailand and other countries, it's part of their economy. So there's less shame though it's still considered a lesser, frowned upon profession.

These girls want love but they know these bar guys are no different from them. Seeing multiple partners everyday. This is a chance for them to have fun without attachments. They can have a fantasy boyfriend then walk away without all of the hassle of a real relationship. Which is pretty much the same thing they themselves do for the male johns.
