Could someone please explain the ending?

This was a shaping up to be pretty decent(by no means great)movie...right up towards the end, where it just turned into a mess. As the credits rolled, myself and all of the other Horrorfest attendees(all 10 or so of us in Sunny San Diego-Oceanside)sat there dumbfounded-and then started asking each other, "what happened?"

SPOILERS AHEAD

So, where they all ghosts to begin with? Were they stuck in an eternal loop, doomed to repeat the acts of that night bc of a lack of revenge? Is that why the lead females eyes turned all black as she missed hitting her Mother with the car again? Did all of this nonsense really start bc this old coot killed those kids over his dog? HELP!!:)

I was definitely left confused too. If someone can explain it that would be great.

I doubt the writer could even explain it. It's just a bloody mess. Started out ok, then just fell apart.

Good call...I think I'm gonna just erase this one from the old organic computer lol

****** SPOILER AHEAD *******

The ending scene with the daughter in the car, eyes turn black.
Thru out the show, we have seen that only 1 type of people has their eyes turned black. THE DEAD.
Now, do you remember that part right from the very beginning... One of the guy (The one who share car with her) mentioned something about "what happened to your other car?"... If I am the writer that would the small little fact that I would insert in to round the story up...

So, my explaination would be that she is already dead right from the very start. She was in an accident and did not made it to the whole trip alive. Her ghost has to complete the cycle and therefore came along to end it all.

Other thing which can be of debate is whether the old man is still alive or is he also a ghost since there is suggestion that he tried to hanged and kill himself. Since I do not see his eyes turn black anywhere, I would take it that he is still alive, but is prevented from dying by the ghost until "the witness, judge and executor" would come to complete the cycle.

I guess the show is just a bit silly in the sense that all the new kids died by some freak accident instead of being killed by ghost or something... Remember, the stick through the body, burned by fire, couple slashing each other...

oh thanks mom..

thats what she must be thinking being in the loop now..

your input makes sense though..

you were just SCii Fiied..!!!

reply

I believe that fate willed her to go their experience the events, stop the loop because she was related to the events. She probably is now out of the loop, that's why they showed the happy montage at the end. She ended the curse and set everyone free. That is my interpretation.

I thought it was obvious that she was stuck in the loop now as well, I really liked that twist. The montage during the credits, I took as just a fun reminder of how quickly their perfect boat trip turned horrible. Seriously, I don't think I've seen a movie where everything turns to crap so quickly, I loved it!!

reply

Damn, it looks like everyone is as clueless as I am. Lol, I was hoping to see if someone understood it. I guess the "her being dead from the start" explanation will have to do. Thanks for posting....took the words out of my mouth!

reply

Seems to me that probably Laura and Nick escaped, but the Reeds area continues on with the supernatural activity and residual hauntings (as in the replaying of past events) along with the intelligent apparitions.

They could be stuck in that nightmarish realm seemingly forever, but I don't think there's a strong enough indication of it, unlike say the ending of Salvage.

reply

I was rating this very highly until the end. I thought the acting and cinematography and directing was spot on.

I was left very confused. That's a shame. If there had been just a bit more explanation at the end. Clearly she's dead and clearly the guy at the end is dead too because he had the black eyes.

All I know for sure is it is a loop and I'm going to guess that they all died and are looping just like the earlier teenagers did, so that there are two intersecting loops connected by the old man and the girl and her mother.

At what point people died, I have no idea -- it wasn't clear.

reply

I saw this last night and I was also confused so thanks to some people on here that are explaining what happened in this movie.

I believe she was dead. When the captain shot the redhead in the face you then see them pan away and another shot is fired indicating he shot her to. Atleast this is what I thought.

reply

I was also thinking along the lines that we was dead, but in the dvd scene selection menu, the final scene before her eyes turn black is titled "Mom's Free", which leads me to believe that the cycle has ended and maybe now the spirit of the whole thing is finally leaving her body, or however you want to explain it. I was also thinking that this is the reason they show the whole party going on again, because now they can go enjoy it for real, and not be part of the loop. Either that, or that black stuff in here eyes indicates she got the black oil from the old X-Files episodes, and now Mulder and Scully will head to the Reeds to investigate...

reply

Just finished the Reeds...I'm going with either:

A. Her killing the old man set the old man & the teens "spirits" free of the ghostly loop...hence, the smile back at her & her eyes turning black

OR

B. she was a ghost/dead & in the loop to begin with.

Anything other then these 2 would confuse the he11 outta me even more!!

Seems like a time looping of past and presents coming together is hinted at by black eye episodes. I think the group went up to the water area with the reeds for a weekend. They became caught in a loop of sorts whereby there was various shootings of themselves at least one time over. The time around we see is what actually happened on the last time around when the Dr. makes it to the point she kills the bad guy. Then they time warp out of the loop back into the start of the loop, which is where we see her daughter. At this point there is no more loop. The bad stuff is done with and the group has a happy holiday. Otherwise there is no point in not having the VW, and that is why none of them are actually dead. It's the reeds that make you see things, like a group of dead kids smoking on your boat.
