breaking and entering

Way to break the law, Sheriff. No warrant, no probable cause for search and seizure. Just breaking into folks' homes. Nice.

Yeah, but you're meant to think that he's a jerk for doing that. He's basically the film's villain so he's going to do illegal/bad stuff, cop or not.

reply

He did a lot worse in the book.

reply

I never read the book. What's he do there?

reply

It started with him taking pictures of girls sunbathing naked on his police camera. He also used his position to scare off men that dated his ex (can't think of her name). I don't think he hit her, but he was a lot scarier towards her in a psychologically abusive way. I can't remember what else, but I read the book after seeing the movie and thought, wow, they really toned him down for the movie (and he was still pretty bad in the movie!).

reply

Damn, yeah, the guy seems like more of a monster in the book then. In the movie, it gave this vibe that we're supposed to pity him such as when he saves his son at the end, which I found kinda awkward given how he was a complete jackass throughout the film.

reply

I felt the same way in the movie....and he tried to save the son in the book too. Either way, it was too late to redeem that character.

reply

Movies love to paint Louisiana cops as jerks

reply

You forgot the part in the book where he was in the middle of trying to rape his ex-wife when the son went running off.

He did more than that.. his first meeting with Logan, he unlawfully searched him for no reason. During the scene where Logan was walking he stole one of his fruits and spit it in his face, then he pulled a gun on an unarmed man and threatened to kill him. People were fleeing from the scene in fear. That's attempted murder and public endangerment if I've ever seen it. Guy should've been rotting in a prison cell but he knew the right people I guess. What a jackass. I felt nothing for him when he died. I thought it was undeserved that they tried to give him redemption like that when he was an ass to everyone and in the final scene, he showed up and scared his own kid away. Good riddance to the character.

Exactly you don't just invite yourself in and start snooping around someone's home. What kind of psychopath doesn't have respect for other people's personal property? Just because your a damn cop doesn't give you any right to do that unless he had a search warrant which i highly doubt.

reply

Agree with him being a *beep* person but you don't need a warrant if you have reasonable doubt, which he obviously thought he had.
