Zac Efron's acting?

I wonder what did people think of Zac Efron's acting in the film, since I thought he did a pretty good job with the role.

From someone who, up until now, would have avoided a 'Zac Efron Movie' just because it was a 'Zac Efron Movie', I was really surprised.

Up until now he's always just been 'that annoying guy from those crappy Disney movies' and I honestly thought that was his lot. I took a chance, watched The Lucky One and I was really, truly surprised to see that he's a proper, adult actor who has some real talent. It was enough that I was willing to watch another of his movies and will happily look out for any more in the future.

I too thought Zac did a good job. I never thought he tried to overact, and his lines though sometimes "cheesy" were delivered well. It also helped that he transformed his body, it made his character much more believable.

Only in your mind. Efron was a successful working actor before the Disney stint and he has continued working on other projects since then. "17 Again" and "Me and Orson Welles" were both filmed during the interval between HSM2 and HSM3. He earned good reviews for both, one comedy and one drama.

I agree with the whole " that guy from the crappy Disney films" simply coz I hated him haha. Am going to try and see this film, hopefully I can see him as another character :)

Whether or not he had successes with things he'd filmed in between breaks, High School Musical is still what put him on the map. I've never met anyone yet who hasn't named those movies as what he's 'famous' for.

17 Again is a good movie and he did very well in it. Did it overshadow his 'fame' from HSM? No. Me and Orson Welles is another good movie that he did okay in, but the same question stands and the answer for most people is still no. As for his work before HSM - a lot of people don't know that much of his time before HSM. I've found to date that most of the people who know anything of his work before HSM only really know Summerland and except among those who have followed his career BEFORE now, even that is a bit sketchy. I've found most people who weren't die-hard HSM fans and very 'OMG ZAC EFRON I LOVE YOUUUU', found out about his work before then after the fact anyway.

As for my above view only being in my mind - well yes, shockingly, my views are in my mind and it was my view so... But eventually you have to just realise that I'm not the only person who has that view. So what? HSM films to many people were considered to be incredibly dire movies, personally I find them so nausea inducing they should come with a health warning, I'm not alone. I've yet to meet anyone who says 'Oh, Zac Efron! Yeah, he was that kid in that one episode of E.R'.

reply

Granted, most people are aware of Efron in relation to HSM. What I am saying is that that limited perspective is due only to their limited knowledge. It's like thinking of Christian Bale as "that Bat Man guy." He actually has a body of work far wider and deeper than that movie franchise. The same with Efron.

That's slowly changing. A lot of people are seeing his other movies on cable and experiencing the same awakening as you have.

For anyone who is really interested, they can find my extensive Efron bio here:

I'm on the same boat, I avoided Zac Efron at all costs, but after watching this, Charlie St. Cloud is on my watchlist, I've heard great things, it seems like he's going on the way of Anne Hathaway; started doing disney movies, but is now proving himself to be much more than just a Disney-originated pretty face.

You should check out 17 Again, maybe his best film.

Watch The Paper Boy if you want to see Zac at his finest. I warn you it's an incredibly dark & dysfunctional story but very well done.

reply

I liked his acting a lot.

People always say that this is one of the movies that show that Efron has talent. Honestly I think he was just average in the film. Really nothing special at all. But I've seen a lot worse from him. So I guess he's moving up in my opinion.

I think he's a good actor and he did well in this movie. Might be my favorite part of this film.

reply

I think he was decent in this film. He's a good actor but I don't think he did all that well with this character, he was just kina wooden. I felt like he was trying to do the whole subtle and disciplined war hardened vet and he looked emotionless at times and stiff. A better actor would have been better. But don't get me wrong Zac CAN act he just didn't do too well here. If you really wanna see his best I prefer 17 Again and Charlie St. Cloud. He surprised me in those two. Comedy and Drama wise.

reply

I think he was fine in this. Nothing spectacular, but passable.

reply

At first I thought, Okay, he's underplaying his role; not bad. Finally I decided, No, he isn't underplaying - he really is that wooden on screen.

Tout homme a deux pays, le sien et puis la France.

reply

^ hes suppose to be wooden. His character just went to war three times. I doubt someone whos gone through that is cheery and bright.

reply

No acting ability at all. The scenes of him going to Iraq in combat were hilarious though. You see pretty boy Efron trying to act like a ''soldier'' and hold a gun. It had me nearly roaring. Such a bland movie overall. Efron was always all good looks and no brains.
