Alcohol allergy?

Ms. Baron claims she is allergic to alcohol, but I thought to myself and concluded that was a very, very ridiculous thing. It seems like a well-respected doctor at the Mayo Clinic thinks likewise.

So, if she's gonna spout that hogwash in her documentary, she'd better back it up. I think the numbers would agree that the chance of a true allergy is next to nil, and she's just a light-weight and a liar at best.

well put!

I know she was trying to relay a neutral position on the topic, but seriously its about beer and you can't even drink it?

So she said "allergy" when she should have said "intolerance". So what? It still makes drinking any amount of alcohol a pretty unpleasant experience.

You saw Dingleberries?

Yeah, I thought this was very weird. She had good connections in the industry, but it made me wonder what her motives for making the movie were?

reply

She mentioned her motives EXPLICITLY, she wanted people to recognize the smaller beer brands.

And arguing an allergy and an intolerance is semantics.

She might be allergic to hops, but that might be a stretch. I once dated a girl who used to break out in hives when she drank tequila, especially the high end stuff, so we surmised she was allergic to agave, but who knows. The ingredients change chemically when brewing and distilling, so it's anyone's guess.

reply

Most likely she is allergic to brewer's yeast. It's in nearly all alcoholic beverages, especially beer.

She headed the Mike's Hard Lemonade company. You don't exactly have to have an appreciation for premium beer, to run that outfit. The product is basically an alcoholic version of Kool-Aid. So who cares if she's allergic to alcohol, or not? The woman produces an interesting documentary about competition in the beer industry, and that's pretty much all that counts. The guys from Steely Dan didn't know a thing about college football, but managed to insert an iconic lyric about the Crimson Tide into one of their songs, and no one questions their affiliation with sports.
