What a dumb scene when talking about marriage and Jake walks up on. She yells at Edward "you knew he was listening!" Huh? He walks up behind Jake and she is facing him. Maybe Edward did know he was there, but Jake was looking right at her. No way possible she didn't see him. Scene bad enough without that goof up
shareSorry but Edward was right between Bella and Jake. Bella was first looking directly into Edward's face, then she looked down as Jake very quietly appeared directly behind Edward. Bella did not see Jake until after he spoke, then she maneuvered around Edward to see him. Edward, of course, knew where Jake was as he could read his thoughts anywhere within (at least) a one-mile radius.
Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You were the best.
He can hear thoughts up to a three-mile radius. Those he knows really well are within the 3-mile range. The less he knows someone, the shorter the range he can hear them.

So, how did he not hear them on the bottom of the mountain in the previous scene? He's able to hear Bella's teeth chattering (his exact words in that scene) through howling winds during a blizzard, but he can't hear them talking on the bottom of the mountain in no weather whatsoever?
shareJacob is in human form when Bella & Edward are discussing their engagement. He was in wolf form when he heard her teeth chattering. At this time, I don't recall anything about the wolves having exceptional hearing other than what is normal for human and wolves.
Only Edward can hear thoughts. And he can hear those he knows well up to three miles away.

Or are you referring to when Bella caught up to Jacob to try and keep him from being suicidal when going off to fight? Of course Edward heard that. He could even 'hear' it in Jacob's mind. He knew Jacob was playing Bella to get her to ask him to kiss her.
Edward can't read Bella's mind, but he can hear her heartbeat. He can read her emotions in her voice, her physical mannerisms and smell the worry and adrenaline oozing from her skin. He knows she has strong emotions for Jacob. He also knows that those strong emotions are nowhere near her feelings for him.
