Something I don't understand

Okay, I don't understand why anyone in this movie does anything, but in all seriousness, there's one thing above all others that confuses me to no end (even beyond Victoria randomly running into two enemy territories fifteen minutes into the movie for literally no reason at all except to move the "plot" forward.)

The tribe says Bella is going to be the first outsider to EVER hear their histories.

WHY???

This girl is a known ally to their centuries-long mortal enemies. And Jacob knows that she could be changed into one of them somewhere down the road. Plus, Leah rightly points out that all she ever does is screw with Jacob's emotions. Why would Bella, of ALL people, be the first person ever to hear this secret information? And yes, I know they don't share any secrets that could really compromise their tribe, but it just makes zero sense on any level. You're telling me there's no other person over their centuries of living there that deserved to hear their history more than Bella??? Bella should be the LAST person they would want to share this with, given who she has sided with. And even if the whole point was just to show her how deadly the vampires are, she clearly doesn't care at all. She never has any qualms about staying glued to Edward every second of her life.

Literally the only reason I can ascertain that she's hearing these stories...is because one of the wolf boys has a crush on her. That's it.

Victoria is testing the boundaries of the wolves' territory. She's learning how they work, and using what she learns to get to Bella and get out alive. She's also toying with them. Victoria's gift is that she has "enhanced self-preservation." This is why James spared her life when he attempted to track and kill her. Only three people ever managed to evade James and live. One vampire, and two humans.

Victoria is also testing Alice's gift. Trying to figure out how to stay off of Alice's radar so that they don't see her coming and be prepared for her.

... ... ... ... ...

Jacob and Billy are hoping Bella will see what she will become when she is turned. They want her to see that even though the Cullens do only feed on animals, that she will be a new vampire who has no self control. They want her to realize that for herself ... that the Cullens may not be able to stop her from feeding on humans, on them ... and that she will have to be killed in order to protect human life. And that when she is, that the Cullens will then take their revenge on them, and that even more human deaths will be a result of her decision.

Bella has faith that the Cullens will be able to protect the humans from her, and she also believes that her pre-knowledge of vampires and their ability to not kill humans will keep her from taking any human life. She knows what she wants, and she believes that she can have it, with only the cost of her own life, and no one elses.

Bella doesn't toy with Jacob on purpose. This is a result of the publishers wanting a trilogy. Originally, Stephenie only wrote two books. The second book was called Forever Dawn. (You can read info about it on SM's website.) In this book, Edward doesn't leave, and Jacob has a very small role in the book. He enters the picture after Renesmee is born, and imprints on her. So, when SM worked to make the book into a trilogy, Edward decided to leave to save Bella from either becoming a vampire, or being killed/eaten by one. This gave Jacob an in, as he'd had a crush on Bella since book one.

Bella is also a bit psychic. Her ability works differently from Alice's gift. Her 'visions' come to her in her dreams. And she gets feelings about things. She feels that Jacob is her family. She wants him close, just not as close as Jacob wants to be. When he gets too close, she pushes him away, and when he gets too far away, she pulls him back in. She never seems to be able to find the right balance ... nor is able to get Jacob to understand where she wants him to fit within her inner circle.

Being a wolf, Jacob is able to sense Bella's emotions, so he knows the turmoil of feelings going on within her. And, at one point he's able to even get her to realize that he could be the one, if not for Edward. But there is Edward, so Bella slams that possible 'romantic' door closed between her and Jacob forever. That is a path she chooses not to go down. And then the story finally heads back into the direction of Forever Dawn ... Jacob becomes Bella's family, just as she always felt he would be, by imprinting on Renesmee.

Of course, as always, YMMV

And not just human lives, but possibly the lives of a few Cullens as well.

How different is Breaking Dawn from Forever Dawn? What changed, what stayed the same, and why? Will you ever post extras from Forever Dawn?

The basic story is the same. Bella and Edward get married and go to Isle Esme for their honeymoon. Bella gets pregnant with Renesmee. The birth just about kills Bella, but Edward makes her a vampire in time. Jacob imprints on Renesmee. Alice has a vision of the Volturi coming to destroy the Cullens with the “immortal child” as their excuse. Alice bails. Bella’s shielding abilities turn the tide in the Cullen’s favor, along with Alice bringing home another half-vampire to prove that Nessie isn’t a danger.

The things that are different:

*** Jacob and Bella are not nearly so close. None of the events of New Moon or Eclipse exist; Edward never leaves, so Bella and Jacob never bond. Jacob’s feelings for Bella remain at crush level.
*** Due in part to Jacob being a smaller character, the werewolf pack is only sketchily developed. It exists as a whole, but there isn’t much information about the individuals. Most of the wolves do not have names.
*** The entire story is written in Bella’s perspective. Because of this, there is a lot more emphasis on the pregnancy phase.
*** Jacob isn’t there at the delivery, naturally, so he imprints on Renesmee a few weeks later when Bella is visiting Charlie.
*** With no New Moon or Eclipse, Victoria and Laurent are both still alive. Laurent stays happily with Irina and sides with the Cullens in the confrontation with the Volturi. It is Victoria rather than Irina who informs on the Cullens to the Volturi. She creates a new friend, Riley, to make the actual accusation. She doesn’t want Aro to know about her agenda—or the fact that the baby is only half-vampire, of which she is aware.
*** The wolves kill Victoria. She is the only casualty at the final confrontation.
*** The last chapter ends the same way, but there is an epilogue. It involves Max (J. Jenk’s assistant). Bella’s initial interaction with him is a little bit longer and, feeling she owes him a favor, she gives him her number and tells him she will help him out in return if he ever needs a favor of his own. Max gets himself into some trouble, and Bella gets to play Superman.

I may post some extras someday if I ever have time to go back through the Forever Dawn manuscript—it’s just as long as Breaking Dawn. There are a couple of things that family members told me they particularly missed, so I would start there.

While writing the books, were you ever unsure of whether Bella would choose Edward or Jacob, or did you always know she would end up with Edward in the end? – Samantha V.

I wrote New Moon and Eclipse after I wrote Forever Dawn, which is pretty much the rough draft of Breaking Dawn. So I always knew Bella’s destiny was with Edward, and as her relationship with Jacob evolved and deepened through the course of the middle novels, writing about it was sometimes painful. Even knowing Jacob’s eventual happy ending, it was hard to put him through all the heartbreak. I do know what would have happened if Bella hadn’t jumped off the cliff that day, but I always knew that was a could-have-been that wasn’t the right way to go.
