The accent?

Why do Gru and his mother sound foreign? Where are they supposed to be from? Is it relevant to the story at all?

Did you also watch it on tv in the uk?

it sounds eastern european

reply

No, I don't live in UK, I probably watched thehe original American version.

It sounds Easten European, but at times also Hispanic American.

I read some interviews, it was supposed to be funny, just like that. Well, their idea of fun, I guess.

Her in the United States we equate eastern European accents with a sense of mystique and magic. Movies for years have given these accents to characters like Dracula and Dr. Frankenstein and gypsies and other horror type people. Who knows why. Maybe Victor Borganine had a good Romanian accent. Gru tends to have been raised in a similar environment to The Munsters or the Adams family so the accent would make sense considering what people are used to I feel.

I always thought of it as about 70% Russian and the rest a mix of European. I think the voice is a riot.
