Who is Gru based on?

I think I read it somewhere, but I forgot. From who did the animators get inspired to draw Gru? He reminds me of a very old actor playing villains.

reply

Reminds me of Uncle Fester from the Adams Family... Maybe Nosferatu abit too.

Hey Jin! You better not be cheating on me!!

reply

Yeah, I thought Nosferatu too, but Gru is a little bit bigger!

reply

With a hint of 007's Blofeld or Austin Powers' Dr. Evil maybe?

reply

Good guesses!

He reminds me of Corvax from Muzzy in Gondoland:

I believe the grammar for which you are searching is "Gru is based on whom?"

Folks forget "Whom" is a wonderful objective case that is woefully under used.

reply

And WHOM are you to tell me how I should write it??
Ok, I'm kidding, sorry, English is not my first language, and I often translate it from my original language. But, wouldn't it be more correct like "who is Gru based on?". I mean, like I had it, but without "from"?

reply

Dream, if you had said "Gru is based on whom?" you would have been technically correct . . . and everyone would know you are not a native English speaker because noboby but nobody ever uses "whom," ever.

"Who is Gru based on?", while technically incorrect, because you should never end a sentence with a preposition, is the way everyone would say it.

Which reminds me of a joke about this very subject:

A new student arrives on campus and is looking for the library.
Student to a professor: Where's the library at?
Professor: Young man, you should not end your sentence with a preposition.
Student: OK. Where is the library at, a$$hole?

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

reply

But "whom" exists, doesn't it? Why nobody says it?

So, which is the best way to say my Gru question??

LOL on the joke!

p.s.: In your signature line, does he mean "picture" as an "X-ray"??

reply

Whom exists, but it is very stiff and formal. Casual language does not use whom. People who do use whom are made fun of.

The best way to ask the Gru question is, "Who is Gru based on?" This is true, even though that sentence ends in a preposition. No one would correct you for that "mistake".

Yes, picture means x-ray. It's a line from the song "Turning Japanese."

I think he looks a lot like Irish comedian Dara O'Briain. Google it!

Think I'm just too white and nerdy...

I thought he looked like Peter Lorre from "The Hands of Orlac"/"Mad Love"
