why didn't joe wait out the wolves?

I know they were freezing and anxious but why didn't Joe wait on that other chair or at the top of the ladder while the wolves were down below? Wouldn't the wolves go for their easiest meal? They wouldn't wait for hours to see if dinner was coming to them. Then Joe may have made it down alive.

Just another thought: when Joe was thinking the girl he met would pay for their house and Steve the dog he obviously didn't consider his huge settlement from the ski resort.

Joe thought he could fight the wolves off with the end of his ski pole which is sharp. The problem is he turned his back on them and tried to ski down the hill. He would have done better and maybe survived if he ran down the mountain fighting them off with his ski pole. The wolves would of eventually given up on him.

I kinda wondered the same. But I think it was sheer desperation and thinking he could fight the wolves off with his poles. Either way, I was broken when he was getting attacked and was later seen torn to shreds.
