share^^ This. It is made pretty clear (especially in the book) that he will lose custody over his son (who was basically his whole world). To top it off with a traumatic childhood, addiction to drugs, and a dead wife.. his life was sadly not the greatest..

Then it all went wrong and, on top of the other factors Mr. S mentioned, it was too much to bear I suppose.
It's also possible that, once busted, he compared himself to his mother (this is where the kid's name is relevant) and couldn't live with the possibility that he could sink as far as her and endanger his own son.
