why does the sister have to be such a bitch?

I don't see why her character had to be so shrewish and tight-assed. Couldn't she have been mildly disapproving or something just as effectively? Seems to me she's playing more of a stereotype than anyone else in the film.

Because it was in the script.

I thought it made the script more interesting. It would have been boring if she was just mildly disapproving. Her attitude just added interest.

Well fact is she is a sister, who is basicly trying to protect her sister. Keeping in mind her sister had already thrown her life away for a guy she didn't want to see that happen again.

It was understandable that she would be concerned and protective, she is her sister after all.

reply

Exactly how I felt. She didn't want her sister to repeat what had gone on earlier in her life. I think she also didn't want her to move. It was strange that she didn't encourage her to get her own apartment once she started to make good money. Over-protective is a good description.

As an older sister, I completely understood her attitude. I might not have agreed with every one of her actions/words but I supported the attitude. She saw Erin throw away her own dreams for a guy once before and then sat there and watched her sister agonize over the decision to give up her own dreams once again for a guy. Of course she would be concerned! She also wants to make sure the guy knows how much she is giving up for him so that if he isnt serious about the relationship, then he can say something.

I would have done the same thing for my little sister, just without the meaningless threats of cutting off body parts. In fact, the reason why I liked my brother in law so much was that he basically did that exact same thing to me when I dished out some sisterly teasing. I knew any guy who was going to respectfully put me in my place in order to protect her was someone that just might be worthy of my little sis.

I thought Christina Applegate was quite funny as the over protective, fussy sister.

reply

I actually liked her character. She seemed like the most realistic person in the movie.

And she was certainly the funniest to watch. That Thanksgiving table scene was classic!

Um, bitch seems like a really strong word for her character. I thought she seemed harsh and insensitive in her very first scene with Erin on the webcams, but in the rest of the movie she just seemed protective, and maybe mildly traumatized by seeing Erin and her boyfriend having sex on her dining room table. She was actually the only character in the movie besides the two leads that I liked (and I normally don't even like Christina Applegate).
