Honestly, if you hated this movie probably took it WAY too seriously!

Seriously, the movies title is "Gangster Squad"...not that serious of a name. The only thing that could have made it LESS serious was the addition of an exclamation point. "Gangster Squad!".

Yes, it is full of cliches; the weirdly faced bad-guy, the (gorgeous) damsel-in-distress, and the high-pitch-voiced sidekick...and a lot of gunfire.

But these cliches are part of the fun!

This movie is a great throwback to those 1940's serials...even down to a nice "cameo" by Carmen Miranda (Boom Chica-Boom)

Josh Brolin, in the face, is about as stereotypical 1940's cop as it gets. He delivers a kickass, static-character, never-smiling, tour de force performance.

Sean Penn does an interesting job as Mickey Cohen...down to the Barbra Streisand nose.

Emma Stone is half of the reason to go see the movie. Absolutely STUNNING throwback.

Great fun!

4.5/5.......it loses a half of a point because of a lack of exclamation point in the titles.

GANGSTER SQUAD!

Totally, totally agree.

If you go into this expecting The Godfather or Goodfellas, you're going to come away sore.

If you're just looking for a fun mob movie that's more of a cross between Dick Tracy and The Untouchables, you'll enjoy this.

Yes, thank you. In this case they really are.

This is a good neo-noir and people seem to forget that Noir is cliche. It has always been cliche. Even when the first Noir movies hit the screen. Probably even before that. :)
It is the ultimate style over substance genre.

Josh Brolin was perfect for the role. He's a manly man who fits the genre perfectly.
Ryan Gosling on the other hand was your typical 21st century pretty boy. He didn't quite fit the movie.

I wasn't happy with Sean Penn as Cohen, but then I just don't like the actor. I thought he just hammed it up a bit too much.

But despite Penn and Gosling I really enjoyed Gangster Squad. Nobody said it was great art, but good entertainment.

Okay, I get where you're coming from. Especially as an afficianado of Film Noir.
Yes, it has it's good points.
Even as a shoot-em-up, bang-bang, type thriller.
But reallistically this was based around historical figures and historical events. It didn't get 1/10 on that score. So I only gave it 5/10 overall. :/

Great period piece action film. It is not a documentary.

Then the movie shouldn't have taken itself so seriously in parts.
