Why is this movie getting so much hate?

Opinions are opinions, but personally I thought this movie was entertaining. It wasn't the best of movies, I admit, but it was still action packed. Who gives a sh!t if it was trying to copy other movies or not? I just watched it because of the fun.

And why in the flying fvck is people complaining about it trying to copy Scarface and other gangster movies? Just because it had gangsters in it? It's a movie about the mob in Los Angeles. That's it.

Oh and also I didn't think the acting was so bad. It had a lot of cliched moments, but it was still fun to watch. That's the point. I just watched it for entertainment, not analyzing the sh!t out of it.

I ran. I ran until my muscles burned and my veins pumped battery acid. Then I ran some more.

reply

You are right, it was entertaining enough.

reply

I thought it was good too. Fantastic cast, some funny dialogue, OTT comic-book but entertaining fight scenes and - I'll say it again, a great cast.
Even the usually powerhouse performer Penn gets overshadowed by a dominant Josh Brolin, a cool Ryan Gosling, a funny - always-likable Giovanni Ribisi and the rest. Much better than the boring Public Enemies.

public enemies is not boring, there's tons of action in it just like with this one

reply

I loved it. One of the better films I've watched recently.

It's not the best gangster film i have seen, but i think it was decent.

reply

Yep i enjoyed this film a lot, its the kind of plot i enjoy. I also like all of the actors ( a special mention for the sadistic hitman who had no lines)

reply

A lot of people don't like, Sean Penn, so give every film he's in a low rating and knock the film and him on the boards. Expected when actors get involved with politics especially when they are extremists.

Personally, I don't rate movies according to who is in it but rather if the film is entertaining to me. This film is a solid 6 and entertaining.

That said, I can't stand Penn and his "greater than great" ego and his extreme left wing politics while not practicing what he preaches. Why doesn't he donate 90% of his income to help the unfortunate he talks about? He would still have plenty to live nicely.

My favorite: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

On a personal level I don't care about Penn one way or the other, but he sure over acted the hell out of this movie. Still, it was an okay show, but would have been better without Penn.

reply

Sean Penn is politically active and the knuckleheads that rate movies here don't like him for that reason? Well whattaya know. Is he too conservative for the Generation X'rs and the Millennials?

reply

Penn pisses off the partisan right wingers who feel threatened by his political stances.

I could care less what he thinks politically and personally, just like I don't care what Robert Duvall or Jon Voigt think politically (both are rather right wing in their own right and openly put down President Obama) but I've enjoyed many of their performances on screen and in television.

Same goes for other people who work in film who have had personal discretionary slips that most of us would find abhorrent, but it doesn't take away from their craftmanship as film makers.

"Where's your spark now?"

reply

You mean by his political COMMUNIST stances.

I would have liked to have seen this movie, but I don't support communists!

And Robert Duvall or Jon Voigt doesn't friend with and support communist dictators like the Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro.

I didn't think it was a good film and didn't enjoy it. Not a hard point to understand.

reply

Me, too. I was surprised by the low rating here. I have never heard anything about this movie and was totally surprised by it.

reply

For what it is (a goofy action movie), I liked it well enough. Like you said, it wasn't great but it was fun to watch. I suspect much of the hate comes from comparing it to the atmospherically similar but aesthetically superior (and different) LA Confidential.

See you in hell, candy boys!

reply

Yeah it was entertaining. I thought it was lots of fun. I think people just hate the political views of the actors/actresses.
