Confused about the end

I don't understand the ending. It had seemed like it was building to a point where, after centuries apart, Stewart/Fennel would be reunited with his destined love, Tulaja. We see her reincarnation at the end giving Laura the other half of the pair, but why didn't Tulaja stay to be reunited with her long parted love?

reply

James was destined to die in her life, but her love persists, it asserts itself through space and time returning life to Jay.

🚫 SPOILER ALERT

As we know there's two stories in the two different eras. But remember someone explains about 'space and time' and Laura saw it in a crystal box kind of future tv or something.

That's a hint for Laura what to do (from the future). The same thing Sadhu (Guru Dev) also explains to Tulaja (from the 18th century), which is a hint for her how to save James (even though he has already died).

At the time when Jay found the ring in the future, one of the ring was separated from another with the gap of centuries. So he dies in both the timeline.

It might be the two different timelines with centuries of gap, but both are took place at a same time. So Tulaja lost her lover, but she could save another version/reborn James (Jay) and she does it by bringing the rings together. But how did she traveled through the time is still a mystery.

And Tulaja did not stay coz James (Jay) was already happily married, so at least she can save him from the death where she'd failed once before.

I think I understand now. Maybe I missed some of this the first time around. I wasn't watching that closely. I'll have to re-watch it and see if that helps. Thanks for your posts.

Don't bother. You missed nothing. The explanations for the rings being in the shipwreck, the initials D.E., etc. are never given. It's like a whole chunk of the story - maybe 30 minutes worth - either got cut or was never made.

The movie should have been made as a simple colonial India period piece.

Dolly had the rings in her purse. She died on the way to America.

agreed. there was way more chemistry there and the whole thing worked better. if they had to do the time travel, he should have just remained in the past in india, survived, and been reunited with his indian love, via help from the ring.

p.s. the ring never kept its magic promise - happiness like i will never know, said the queen.

The ending also confused me. Furthermore, I watched Josh Hartnett's final scene six or seven times -- rewinding and rewinding -- but could never figure out what the heck he was saying! Very frustrating.

I'm confused about the entire movie. It sucked.
