What made them decide to go MMO?

They had an existing storyline already and it was a little questionable to create a whole new one for the 2nd movie (but at least they hinted that they would explore it more in a new game).

So why create something that is generations later? Or do they mention Revan and what became of him/her?

Revan gets talked about fairly frequently. Some characters from KotOR make appearances in some form or another in SWTOR
Little to no mention of KotOR II in the game though...likely because nothing significant really happened in it.

To find out what became of Revan there are two major sources of information:

The novel titled "Revan" by Drew Karpyshyn.

Flashpoint Missions "Boarding Party" and "Foundry" from the MMO.

Revan's backstory is pretty much the entire plot of the mid-game Act in the MMO.

Don't forget the Republic equivalent flashpoints in the same level range, Taral V and especially Maelstrom Prison. Taral V/Maelstrom actually takes place first chronologically, with Boarding Party/Foundry being the aftermath of the Rep ones.

In a nutshell for the unfamiliar: The Republic frees Revan from the Maelstrom Prison, and he goes off to do his own thing, including finding the Foundry, an old superweapon sibling to the Star Forge. Revan has HK-47 with him and Imperials stop him. He's beaten but he teleports away, living to fight another day(though nothing yet in the game after that).

The greet of ea is why they made TORtanic.

reply

Except TOR has been in the works since 2006, some 3 or so years before EA bought BioWare.

Nice try trolling though.

What the hell is greet? O_o

I think he meant greed, but I had to look close to read through the (naturally) poor spelling of a trolling attempt.

Attack the spelling mistake and not the content, sure is biodrone in here. I forgot that everyone with an opposing view is a troll to your type. Silly biodrones, I don't understand how you can so fanatically defend such an inferior product. It's like you're a kid that grew up with thesepractices as "normal".

reply

What spelling mistake did I attack? I attacked that fact you blamed a company who had nothing to do with the company for the first 3 years of a game's production.

Yeah, really don't follow "Attack the spelling mistake and not the content".

I called you a troll for the blatant disregard of facts you used to attack a company that had nothing to do with the game's production, not for spelling or for you having an opposing viewpoint. I'll gladly accept your opposing views as long as you get your facts straight.

And resorting to namecalling like "Biodrone" is also not a constructive use of opposing viewpoints. That's another reason to call what you're doing trolling.

So a mix of presenting lies as truth and namecalling, that's why I called you a troll. Not for having an opposing viewpoint.

*edit*
I did note you misspelling a word, but I did not use it as an attack. I noted it in a reply to someone else who called out the spelling, but my actual reply to you only had problem with your misblaming EA for a game that was being made for 3 years before EA had purchased BioWare. I also didn't resort to namecalling. So my earlier points in this topic still stand(the mix of false facts and namecalling).

Nope, no attackson spelling here. As for "trolling" I have made a maximum of 3 posts, wow.

We could have had KoTOR 3 but we got TORtanic. 83,000 users...Runescape has 111,000 users. This is the biggest failure is MMO history. I will laugh loudly at their $300 million loss too. They could have iven us KoTOR like the fans wanted but their greed caused them to make a subscription based MMO to be the next "WoW killer". If ea would have listened to their fans they ould have made a profit sinse 2008 unlike now. DA:2, ME3 and TORtanic, these people deserve their record stock plumeting. Not to mention how they treat their customers. DING DONG BANNU!

reply

You don't have to make multiple posts to troll. A single post is all it takes. Trolling isn't determined by post count, but by content of posts.

"TORtanic", that hasn't gotten old yet. Not at all. Funny thing is, no one called Titanic unsinkable until after it sank, so the analogy isn't apt at all. TOR hasn't sank yet at all. It could be(and likely is) sinking, but it's not underwater yet. Titanic has been remembered for over a century since it first set sail and has captured the hearts and minds of millions in ways that never would've happened if it had completed its oceanic trip intact. Again, thanks for comparing TOR to the legacy of that.

Where have you gotten that TOR has 83,000 users? The game had 15 times that number at the last earnings call. Nice of you to pull numbers out of your ass though. Can I pull some out too? TOR has 2 million users again. 1.2 brought everyone back! I can play this game too. Even the most pessimistic numbers analysts say TOR has a player base in the upper hundred thousands.

The amount of money gained or lost on TOR hasn't been stated either, beyond rumors of a hundred million dollar budget. 2 million players bought it at launch for a minimum of $60, which is a $120 million profit, a net gain of $20 million, not even counting how many people spent $80 on the Digital Deluxe Edition or $150 on the Collector's Edition, which would easily add more money to the profit. If even 1% of players bought the CE, that's a $3 million extra profit there. If 5% bought the CE, that adds an extra $15 million to the profit.

BioWare has been making TOR since 2006, long before fans had any inkling of wanting a KotOR3. BioWare didn't even want to make a KotOR2(why do you think they gave it to Obsidian?), much less a KotOR3, so they were never going to make a KotOR3 even if fans whined hard.

EA didn't even own BioWare in 2008, which as I pointed out in earlier posts in this topic is a big failure of research on your part, to blame EA for the production of a game by a company they didn't own until well after the game was announced(much less started production).

ME3 didn't fail. Its end was confusing and underwhelming, but the other 99% of the game is fine. It's haters on the internet who make that 1% into the 100% that make it sound like the game was bad. And the game sold like hotcakes, so it wasn't a failure, and stock wouldn't hurt. Investors don't care about reviews, they care about profits. Why do you think Activision gets by so well with their entire business model of barely improved sequels each year?

By the way, if you still wanted a KotOR3, damning TOR would not help. If TOR fails, LucasArts won't see the value of making more products in this era. TOR's success would've helped build up this era, including potentially future games. The Revan novel shows that there's still stories to tell between KotOR1+2 and TOR. But please, damn TOR and call it the worst thing ever so LucasArts and BioWare and EA see no reason to make anything else in this era.

It's like you're shooting yourself in the foot here.

reply

So you are clearly ea damage control and use buzzwords and pr to your own benefit. Funny how ea fired 200 people today. Let us put our ideas aside and use the subscribers as fact. 100% light servers, oh god, my sides, the damage control can't stop my laughing. This is the biggest failure in MMO history, their greed makes me hate them.

What ever counter you pr types are paid to come up with, TORtanic is sinking. I was a major fan until the ea vampire came to drain you. They will just buy another company, fire everyone involved and rape their new ips.

reply

EA doesn't own the TOR franchise, LucasArts does. Troll a little harder next time.

And SW:TOR has been called the most "successful and STABLE" MMO launch to date. Made money right away, with a large population.

The 100% light servers? Any given time of day I see at least 4 or 5 at standard. A few Heavy during Peak time on the weekends.

Most of the population flux was due to the Aussies and New Zealanders getting their own set of servers (that us USstanis and European folks can't access). And yes, with the new server transfer ability coming up, things will get better as I am sure that they will encourage people to move together towards the busier servers so they can shut down the ghost town servers.

Ah yes, "call everyone a troll to try and save a sinking ship".

I am no troll, I am a major fan of KoTOR, not TORtanic. You can call it what you want, it is still a $300 million failure. They fired 200 people because it is such a failure, they have 77,000 users, beaten by Runescape, because it is such a failure. Use your insults and pr stunts all you want, TORtanic will go f2p in 3 months. bE Aware stock keeps on plumeting. bE Aware has not made a profit sinse 2008. A pity they keep wasting their money on spamming message boards with propoganda instead of trying to fix the beta test they call a game.

All of your pr crap makes me laugh. Look at the subscriptions, look at the server numbers, look at the lay offs, look at the open revolt from the biodrones on the official and fan forums. TORtanic has reached the ocean floor and no matter how many people you pay to spam the boards, this is company destroying stuff. Screen cap this page and in three months I give you my word that if TORtanic is not f2p or closed I will send you $20, I bet your masters (or common sense) won't let you make the same wager. I am right and any following claims to trolling just show how desperate you are to please your masters at bE Aware, pathetic.

reply

. . .they have 77,000 users, beaten by Runescape, because it is such a failure.

You are most certainly a confirmed troll, because one things trolls do is pull BS out of their arses, as you just did here.

The last reported number of subscribers was 1.3 million, admittedly a drop from 1.7 million in February, but well north of your lie of 77,000.

reply

So no counter apart from "YOU ARE A TROLL!"? I gave you my word, and I mean it. If this sinking ship lasts 3 months, I will give you the equivelant to $20. I am waiting for a counter to my points and you to accept my bet. I give you my word as a gentleman, scouts honour, my human decency and on the grave of my recently passed on relative. Accept and we can exchange information like civilised individuals for our bet.

reply

So no counter apart from "YOU ARE A TROLL!"?

Perhaps you missed the part where I pointed out that their subscriber count was last reported at over a million, which is kind of a lot more than the bogus number of 77,000 that you pulled out of your behind.

If this sinking ship lasts 3 months, I will give you the equivelant to $20.

That would be like taking money from a little kid, and I actually have ethics, so no thanks. I'll just come here and mock you in three months.

reply

No balls then? I will see you in 3 months.

reply

It's a good job you were damage control and a coward. Free to play confirmed ten minutes ago. The ship is on the sea floor.

reply

You are welcome to your delusions. Free to play means they are making a profit. Their business model has them making a profit even at only half a million players and they have considerably more than that.

Assuming, of course, that you aren't making crap up, as you did with your original lie about the number of subscriptions.

reply

I know you are being payed for this but god damn. 5 months and f2p, we aren't desperate, not at all. The facts speak for themselves.

reply

You wouldn't know what a fact was if it bit you in the arse.

reply

Again, personal attacks but won't counter my facts. How much is bE Aware paying you?

reply

Trolls like you simply don't care about or even understand the concept of a fact. You've already been caught making crap up. You will never have any credibility around here.

reply

Trolls...you say something my boss doesn't like, you are a troll, I bet you wish you could go full nazi like on the bw forums. You dare report probrem with grorious game by grorious deveroper? DING DONG BANNU!. TORtanic is going free to play because it is so bad. If you didn't treat the people paying your salary so bady, maybe you wouldn't have to re-make me 3's ending, fire 200 of TORtanics staff or make TORtanic free 2 play because you are desperate for subscribers.

---------end of rine.

reply

Yeah, I remember my first beer.

reply

I gave you my word, and I mean it. If this sinking ship lasts 3 months, I will give you the equivelant to $20. I am waiting for a counter to my points and you to accept my bet. Well, well well!

Here we are three months later to the day and the game is still there. You lose, hands down, just as I said you would.

Was it as successful as it was hoped to be? Hell, no. But free to play is the model of the future, the trend for all MMORG's, so the upcoming change is no big deal.

(You know, you say you were a fan of KOTR, but I'm not buying it. If you don't like multiplayer, this game basically gives you 8 different full length single player KOTR-like stories, only with better graphics and more detail. You really are missing something.)
