Justin is basically kind of an idiot.

"Karate chop? Bam you got beer."
"Here is the world's most famous mountain, Mount Emerest."
Etc.

Sure, he's a nice kid and he's kind to animals, but if you can't even make an effort or have the mental capacity to learn how to say "Thank you" in someone's native language while visiting their country, you really have no business being on a travel show, right?
Oh well, he is a good looking frat boy MTV type, so we look past it and call it "refreshing".

And because Scott says pseudo intellectual stuff based on his entitled white male privileged life - that makes him better?

reply

Ha! Good point. Not really.. I think he's just a little more tolerable because he is more respectful and puts some effort into learning about where he is at and what's around him.

reply

What's all this "white privelege" *beep* you keep spouting off about. Sounds like the problem is yours.

reply

The US has a twice elected black President. I think anyone can be privileged if they have the right mental attitude. As for Scott and Justin, they're just good people. Calling Justin dumb or whatever is just rude. He's cool. Scott is cool. Race, Religion, Sex, if that matters to you the problem is definitely yours.

reply

Frankly, I don't find Justin attractive. Scott on the other hand is hot.

reply

I disagree. Justin adds humour to the mix, he makes the show more fun to watch - a good complement to Scott's more serious, focused persona.

reply

Agreed. Justin is the most useless travel show host I've ever seen. He was often drunk, blatantly ignorant, and for someone who only speaks one language, his English vocabulary is rudimentary. I literally feel embarrassed for Justin. The wonderful travel experiences are completely wasted on him. It's a shame Scott didn't take a better companion.

reply

It's actually a brilliant combination. You have a frat boy drunk and a somewhat intellectual, well travelled and decent dude. It's like a buddy cop movie. This show would be boring as hell if it weren't for Justin's fratboyness. It gives the show a different perspective on why people travel and what they do when they travel. If it were two prim and proper guys/girls then it wouldn't have this multi layered dynamic to it.

The end of the world doesn't seem so bad now that you're here.

reply

This exactly. Justin can get annoying with his antics (just look at Scott's reactions), but he has a knack for connecting with those around him and pushes the group out of its comfort zone. As a travel noob/idiot myself, it's cool to see him evolve over the seasons - if travel changed him for the better, then I can do it too :)

reply

It's basically one hell of a show. I don't know why it is not famous unlike any crap on TV theses days, maybe cause it's just some uncrap Tv show..

It's very soothing(S01 Eo7 Japan The Past ) or completely wild (S01 E10 New Zealand Adrenaline). It is this extreme which make this show one of the best Traveling show ever created in history...seriously I'm not bragging

Check out yourself it on http://visualnama.com/channel/departure/14/
you won't regret it.

In the first season, Justin does indeed come off as an ignorant, annoying frat boy - and to a large extent this is true. He's never travelled before, nor has he hosted a tv show. What we see though is a person behaving pretty much how a young, first time traveller would.

As the show progresses though, and as Justin becomes more worldly and well travelled, we see him evolve into a really interesting host. He's certainly no rocket surgeon, but he learns to respect the country he is in, the people, their religion and their culture. After season two they really seem to cut back on the drinking. More very remote locations help this.

By the end of the show, Justin and Scott have evolved greatly, particularly Justin. He is still goofy, but he really connects wonderfully well with all those he encounters, especially children and animals. He is a great contrast to the somewhat overly serious Scott. It's also refreshing to see someone who is not polished at all hosting a show, but who actually does a really good, unique job of it once he gets into his groove.
