The film I'd fight over

Why is it, that whenever a film tells a story about life, without explaining it, people become so confused? Think of every relationship, even minor friendships, even with a coworker, and how they start. We all make choices and decisions on what to convey, either with words or gestures and what we hide. In terms of relationships, we open up and let down our guard, allowing others in or in many cases, hiding those secrets away that might give away too much.

The entire film is the balance between needing companionship and solitude. The two leads have taken entirely different paths and don't want to walk down them again, both literally and figuratively. It's the respect for one another's privacy and one another's past that allows for the relationship to blossom. They each admire the other one for their differences, but find common ground....and for those not liking the ending, it's the same as the beginning, you just didn't pay attention.

This film was a bit disappointing to me. From the description I thought that I should like it, and it was OK, but I expected better. I felt like the film tried too hard to be unconventional and quirky in terms of how the girl and her relationship with the man was presented. I wish the film had included some more wandering and less interaction between the leads. That way the film would have been closer to Vagabond (1985), which was much more powerful.

Interesting comparison, being that I just saw Vagabond earlier this week. Another powerful movie, but where I felt Nothing Personal excelled is that it cared about relationships and despite Lotte Verbeek's character giving the appearance of being willing to accept loneliness for her freedom, she wasn't, because it's not human nature to do so. While I'm not taking anything away from Vagabond and it's power, one must accept that a person is willing to be miserable to be free, but that goes against what most of us know or can accept. Finally, I could watch Nothing Personal again for enjoyment, whereas, I would only watch Vagabond again for how it was done. There was very little joy to be taken from it. Both, in my mind were incredible.
