funny material, not a natural at stand up

I like Gervais, I think he is a hilarious writer and actor when he is in the right part. But when he does stand up, he seems to have him a little 'fish out of water' feeling. There are moments where it works very well, but there are also long segments where it feels more like you are watching a motivational speaker.

I recommend for Gervais fans, but this will not likely appeal to people who are not familiar with him and his style.

Yeah, a bit awkward with his stand-up. He reminds me of an American Idol-type -- someone who won the fame lotto and is getting to live his dream but isn't necessarily the best at it. Over-exposure: he had a hit with The Office and suddenly become Britain's boldest export. But I think he recognizes this and addressed the whole over-exposure issue in Extras.

His stand-up is funny, it's just his presence that needs some work.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Maybe you just don't particularly appreciate his brand of stand-up, but it's perfect just how it is, and thank Christ he knows that more than viewers and listeners like you do.

Not that I intentionally mean to piss about your opinion, but I'm just thankful that Gervais knows his style and trusts his own work rather than lets himself grow insecure and thinks it might be due for a change because the odd quarker doesn't seem to get it.

in my opinion, his stand up style is different when compared to mainstream comics, whose sole job is to tell jokes/anecdotes on stage.

also, the ratio is different. billy connolly for instance, talks about politics and society, but his main role is to make us laugh.

gervais makes us laugh along the way, but i feel his reasoning for doing live shows is to encourage free thinking. if you watch his stand up, on several occassions, he refers to them as lectures.
ricky gervais, i feel, uses his public position to put across some of his beliefs. encourage people to debate and think, but he does it in a funny way because he can. he is a naturally funny person, and people will expect laughs.

i enjoy his stand up because of this.

i used to watch eddie izzard, who had a surreal approach, rather than gervais' political approach. both of them however, do make their audiences think about things. gervais, again, politically/socially, whereas izzard educated using language, history, sociology.

I love his stand-up act. He's different. I love how he plays out his jokes/stories.
