Question about a scene

I watched the making of featerette on the DVD and they said they used all real sharks, but yet there was that one scene where the shark comes up right on the side of the girls with it's mouth wide open and just missses them. How did they film that?
They had to use fake sharks for the attacks but on the featerette there are no mechanical sharks present (or at least shown).
Anyone know?

You can still use visual effects to edit in an image of a real shark.

Zombie's right its actually pretty easy to combine the two now. I understand they did basically the same thing for Open Water.

It's pretty easy all they have to do is chum the water, get a video of a great white lunging for the bait. Take the video of them in the water and combine the two. It's probably easier then using a mechanical shark.

reply

Exactly. That's what they did for the Australian film, Black Water. They used a real crocodile. They used footage of the croc feeding for the attacks. They just digitally edited it all together.
