Someone explain this to me

How come they did not just go back to the island where they were, with no inhabitants? They could have made smoke signals or something.

Apparently it was too far to swim, although I didn't get the impression that they were that far away.

Don't forget that they sailed away from that island, and kept on going through the night. The accident occurs next morning.
