I agree. People focus on the wrong details when judging this movie. It has a fantastic character arc and plot development. A lot of the scenes are creepy without relying on genre cliches. Great performances, no overuse of special effects yet palpable atmosphere. Clever callbacks and dialogue. It successfully goes from realistic and mundane to the dark fantastical stuff at a great pace. The pacing and buildup reminds me of older 80s horror movies that I love, like Poltergeist and The Shining.

Agreed, this movie is underrated. I loved the twist of a phony preacher who is forced to finally "take up his cross" and fight the demon for real. The acting was also perfect, especially from the girl who played Nell. She was convincing both as a sweet and innocent teenager and as a demon. I even didn't mind that they threw in musical cues.

My only complaint, stemming from the last item I mentioned above, is that this didn't need to be "found footage". The handheld camera style made me nauseous. I know they were filming a documentary, but it didn't necessarily need to be shot as such for the audience. The story would still have worked if normal, locked down camera scenes were thrown in the mix, just as music was added when appropriate.
