naive, amateur, bland

it's hard to believe that "Deliver Us from Evil" is rated only slightly better than this movie, or that it made less at the box office. nothing distinguishes this flick to be remembered after a single watching, as opposed to "Deliver Us from Evil", which had real, blood-freezing performance of a genuine demon posession. i guess that better marketing here made all the box office difference between these two movies.

This movie is a lot more underscored than Deliver Us From Evil until its climax; it would be erroneous to say that an intentional divergence in style with the film you're comparing it to makes it "bland" or "amateur." This film, while not perfect, has a lot more character and substance than Deliver Us From Evil. At least this movie didn't resort to blaring rock music during an exorcism scene.
