Wallowing in self pity - no dialogue hardly, - ugh...

What a waste.
The movie started fine. but after the parents split, we are left to figure out why they are so upset. He becomes childlike eventually playing with kids toys, and taking pills and drinking. She retreats to a hotel, and becomes drunk, and acts schizophrenic - asking for help from a man, then attacking him, and beating him.. She can't explain why she can't sleep or eat. WE NEVER HEAR HER OR HER HUSBAND SAY: "MY SON DIED".. in a pool or whatever.. yes, we can assume, but please .. this goes on for 1 hour and 20 minutes before they finally come to their senses..

A waste...

They'd both just lost a child. People do very irrational things when experiencing such intense grief. I believe if anyone is ever allowed to "wallow in self pity," it should be a parent who's lost a child.

And that's what makes this movie is so brilliant, is that it never has to spell it out that their son drowned in a pool. It's the implications that make it so effective and powerful. It's a shame people missed that.
