Dave

He was such a complete wanker. I was really crying out at the end for him to get his face smashed in by Jim. When Jim left without killing him I was praying he would at least smash up the smug *beep* Audi.

I agree, but what made this such a great drama was its sheer authenticity. In the real world, HOllywood justice is seldom exacted and wankers like Dave succeed in this world and decent people like Jim struggle along and get cheated and manipulated by the the smooth talking charmers.

Dare I say that is the nature of capitalism. In fact, Freefall was the best advertisement of the flaws of consumer capitalism and greedy wealth creation I have seen in a long, long time.

People like Dave are psychopaths with no human feelings, I wish everyone like that would just drop dead. Though in a way mugs like Jim deserve all they get.

reply

How is he a mug for just wanting to move out of his council estate?

I think if Jim had hit Dave (or his girlfriend) in that final scene, then he would have truly lost everything. By stepping back from physical violence, and instead, summing up Dave perfectly ("You're parents would be ashamed of you.") I thought that Jim actually redeemed himself. As the credits roll Jim is the only character we can actually hold out a bit of hope for.

I must say though, Dave's final scene - when he's 'gone green' - did make me laugh. Made me laugh and shout 'You wanker!' in disbelief at the telly...

I applaud the fact that Jim didn't hit Dave - or indeed smash up the audi / the flat. More credible.

I also thought that Jim's wife was a little unfair on him when she criticised him for taking the mortgage. Wasn't she also smitten by Dave during the application form filling scene?

The fact that Dave ended up selling green products was there simply to show how vacuous he was. I think we all realised that he was sell his mother to make a few quid.

Possibly they should show this film in 8-10 years when the property cycle hits another high and mugs are aplenty.

reply

I wouldn't call him a mug for that, just for not being wise to his exploitation.

What was dave saying to jims wife during the brokering session?

3 Fiddy!

reply

I like at the end, Dave was slagging off people who mis-sold mortgages and created the mess. It's what he did.

reply

jon-601, I don't think she was "smitten". The way I read it is that she was completely revolted by him. When he says "you have come to bed eyes" and "what's it like kissing a man with a moustache?" she gives him a look of disgust.

He was an excellent portayal of a salesman (this broad term applies to mortage brokers, estate agents etc). A natural liar.

reply

Possibly bth21 - however I read it as shock/attraction (a complete opposite to her husband). If disgusted - she didn't show it on his way out after the initial meeting.

I would say that not all salesmen/women are liars :) Some have scruples.

reply

I've just watched it and definitely agree with bth21 - she appeared shocked and creeped out by his behaviour towards her, and pleased to have him out of the house. You could tell from her whole demeanour during the discussion of the mortgage with Dave that she was very uncertain about it, unconvinced by Dave and only going through it because Jim was so set on it.

And I've just realised I'm replying to a conversation that's 5 years old.
