shareWhen the French are on, they speak French (and they are on from early in the film, though less so than in the second half). When the Russians are on, they speak Russian, except when they're speaking various kinds of French (antiquated French, halting French, and minimal French).

It's most strange when you're reading subtitles as you do tend not to realise the language is changing - then the Russians start speaking in broken sentences and you realise they've started speaking French!
shareActually I am not sure if there are more versions of the movie but 90% of the one I watched was in french with some russian expressions and loose words. Even when everybody was russian and they were in Moscow they'd speak french so I am thinking 1. There are 2 versions of the movie or 2. I am suddenly fluent in russian.
Can somebody tell me if the french dubbed the film? Because I am more interested in watching the russian version...

You must've seen a French dubbed version, because the movie is mostly in Russian. But international movies like this do tend to be quite misleading, actually. Like, when I watched Joyeux Noël (which was supposed to be in French, German and English), I knew the movie was more French than German or British, so I was expecting French taking over most of the scenes... but then I heard British soldiers talking to each other in French...
And the fact that I read somewhere that German actor Daniel Brühl was praised for his fluency in French in Joyeux Noël even added more confusion.
