Whats with the short seasons?

New viewer and enjoying the show, just ended season 7 ans started season 8. 2 8 episode seasons kinda suck, what happened to 16 episode seasons?

They could only do one more season of 16 episodes, so they found a way to cheat the system by dividing them into two seasons. The idea was to test audience interest. It backfired.
