I may have missed something vital, but why did Laura resist the idea of a financial settlement so strongly? She didn't seem to have a big problem with lying during that time in her life, so for the life of me I can't see why she was seemingly completely opposed to any kind of settlement.

I thought she had major issues with lying. Also, if it went on and on, the truth would come out about the husband's affair, which would hurt the son. Ithink she also knew that.
