Are you referring to the scene when she is looking in the mirror? If so, she said "Lucky Laura".

She was financially in trouble and was desperate. I think she slept with that guy in hopes of that guy taking care of her financially. Right before they had sex, she asked the guy "What do you do again?"

I think the movie was about how she was relying on others to help her out, but in the end she needs to be the one to help help self through her problems.

She was even planning on hooking up with her brother in law. I think after that scene with her dad she started to realize she doesn't need others to help her.

I didn't she was looking for the date to take care of her financially. I think she was a bit messed up and needed an escape in the form of casual sex.

Walt,

I see what ur saying, but w/ regards to the dad's last talk w/ her, what was the big deal w/ that? he didn't say anything I found to be so resonate that she would suddenly grow up. I really felt the ending was kind of abrupt, although most of the movie was pretty damn good.

I think her dad took a long and round-about way to answer her question as to why he hadn't stood up for her as a kid, and eventual said that he had his own problems and was just trying to get by. It seemed like a half apology and half permission to do whatever she needs to get by. I'll admit that it's subtle and just my impression.

His speech to her was very clear. He said, "in the end you have to make your own way." That was not suggestive or beating around the bush, but straight forward.

I don't think she was looking for a new husband that soon. If she was actually looking for financial stability she already had that opportunity with the lawsuit.

She was looking for human warmth and companionship. She got a bare minimal amount from her husband when he was alive. She got about the same from her kid and sister and parents. After the husband died, she felt all alone and isolated from everyone she knew.

She apparently hoped that a hook-up with a stranger would give her some feeling of being loved. But once the guy started sex, he treated her like a piece of meat.
