Any chance the "big" soldier was actually the king of Liang(?)? A king who just wanted a more simple life, tired of war which had taken his family, home, etc.As his last thoughts were of remorse for not carrying on his name or disgusting the Liang name, combine the two and adds a new layer of depth.

Especially when he left the general go cause then Wei would have been without its king but then if you remember in the starting scene, after Chan stops pretending dead and start searching for food and water among the dead soldier, he meets the general of Liang who asks him who are you.. surely the general would know who his king is even if he half dead.
