Excellent but horrible ending! Also........

Just like in the "Shinjuku Incident".

When he has something to do w/ the film, other than acting, co producing, etc...he always puts to much on it in making himself the good Samaritan. It's to the point where he makes himself look ridiculous sickening now. Even in this, "Little Big Soldier", he played the cowardly saint..w t f?!!! And his endings are always cr-p when he helps produce or direct "his own" Chinese films. Anyone else notice this???

In "Shinjuku Incident", he turned snitch, not a witness, but a self-made thug MURDERING low life informant who testified to clear himself. Although he attempted to flip the script to make himself out to be the good-guy-gone-bad-gone-good, that one definitely won't fly to well in America w/ the logical & intelligent....or urban America

Erm, thats just two movies. He isn't doing it to make himself look the good guy. It's how the script is planned.

The ending of this movie doesn't make him a good guy at all, it's just an ending where he died with dignity.

What's wrong with your brain?
Who watches a film like the Shinjuku Incident and says "See how Chan manipulated this shot when he kills these gangsters, totally made it look like he's a saint."

Seriously?

And it's also a trademark role of Jackie Chan to portray a regular every day guy in irregular surroundings. In Little Big Soldier, he's a farmer. He's not playing himself.

Chan has been producing and directing films all of his adult life. Police Story and Project A never got a bad rep of him being too much of a cowardly saint. Yet, that's his gimmick. He says "I don't want trouble", yells out "Smoking is bad for you" to a gentleman and then keeps fighting.

Watch a Sonny Chiba film if you want an anti-hero, or a Bruce Lee film if you want someone that doesn't act like a coward.

But don't verbally assault Jackie Chan for giving his fanbase what they want to see for 30 years.

He is starting to die more at the end...I'm too used to the Jackie Chan who can fight loads of people at the same time, now I learn he can die!!! Its not possible!

I actually thought the ending was really good.

Ending was great, though very sad. Jackie showed himself to not only be humble and righteous, but generous. His "cowardice" or deserter name was more of a blessing than a curse, as he was witty enough to adapt and usually save the day in the long run. I really wanted to see him get his land, or at least live a decent life, especially after letting the general go which he didn't have to do. It's a shame he died, a real shame. I didn't see any political undertones either, if there was any then it was subtle and more than likely more recognizable to the Chinese than an American like myself. Anyways, for me the ending was more or less showing that he wasn't the coward or deserter everyone assumed him to be, but a patriot who did what he felt was right for himself, his father, other beings and his country.

I love the character development in this movie. At first he seems like a coward and a bit of a goof. Then you learn more about his past and the reasons for his pacifism. As with anyone in a war torn region, he was sick of the fighting, sick of the turmoil. All he wanted was a way out, which he saw in the General. But by the end of it all, he empathizes with the General and cannot go on with his plan. Then he gets home and finds his own country invaded and taken over. He's fed up with the war and the conflict, especially now that it has destroyed his home and his only chance of having a peaceful life. And so, he takes a stand against those who stand in his way. He did not want to go to war and invade other countries, but he was willing to fight those who invaded his home.

At least we didn't get a Hollywood ending where he kills the entire army only with his flag.
