Oh, you are SOOOOoooooooo wrong ...!
Once you've seen episode 13, everything that came before it makes sense. There are so many turning points in this episode, for several people. I also want to point out that lots of viewers still weren't into The X Files by episode 11, but it did slowly build a following. That's merely one example of a fine show that began as a sleeper. The difference today is that nobody at the networks is willing to wait for a great show to build that following. They're pretty much all cowards at the top, or they wouldn't cancel shows like this or Kings.
All that said, episode 11 was a necessary set-up for episodes 12 and 13 -- which is where the big payoff starts, and where the drama and the storyline become really intense. I can't imagine viewers who liked, for example, Battlestar Galactica watching all 13 episodes of Defying Gravity and *not* wanting to know what happened next. BSG had episodes that were largely espository, too; it wasn't action all the time. I'm beside myself wondering if ANY network will continue this show -- because this storyline is just TOO GOOD for me not to care about what happens next. Toss all the stupid sitcoms and ER-clones, I say, and bring back Defying Gravity!!!
