If a cure for cancer could only be developed by animal testing......

....would you approve of it? I certainly would. I'm 110% against animal testing for cosmetics but for curing horrible illnesses and pandemics (such as AIDS), I think it's a necessary evil.
Many of you would probably call me an animal for saying this but I think the welfare of a few animals would be a small price to pay, for the sake of millions of humans.
If you disagree with me, think about this. Would you feel differently if it was yourself or a loved one suffering?

It depends on what you were doing to the animals. Are you curing their diseases as well or just ripping them apart (literally and figuratively) and using them as pieces of meat? If it does nothing but harm the animals, I'm not sure I think it would be worth it. Humans really aren't anything special. We only think we are because that's what we are.

Test on death row inmates instead. Give them the option to have their death sentence commuted to life if they agree to undergo medical testing.

Baffling question. I'm 95% against it as it stands, but the OP's scenario is that cancer could be destroyed, but ONLY by animal testing. Cancer is one thing - once a human is cured of cancer, s/he will surely die of other causes, if not of old age.
But if the OP's gambit were expanded to a scenario of animal testing resulting in virtual physical immortality for humans ... I would probably be 95% in favor of that particular result.

reply

Well, not quite immortality, but the ability to cure cancer/aids etc with a 2 week course of tablets, as easily as treating a flu. True, humans will die of other causes but if we could control unpleasant illnesses, the benefit to individuals and families would be worth it.

How would it be worth it? Your scenario is greatly problematic and not because of animal testing.

What about the economic demands a rapidly increasing elderly population places upon a society? What about the ecological demands a rapidly increasing population places upon the planet? We're supposed to die, what's happening at the moment is that people aren't dieing fast enough and people are being born too fast. I cannot see how vastly increasing the average lifespan would be anything other than catastrophic.

How would you implement population control? Perhaps you could have access to the cure-all by forfeiting your "right" to reproduce? Perhaps the government could forcibly sterilise a percentage of the population? Maybe we could bring in some Logan's Run style game or Battle Royale style tournament?

What about the massive global inequality it would create? We already live in a world where access to vaccines, medication and treatment is dependent upon your wealth/location. If some drug company developed a cure-all who do you think would benefit?

reply

We are already to many people on this planet so what we need is more people dying not less.

^ This. Stop testing on animals when there are countless scummy humans in the world who actually deserve to be used as lab rats. Serial rapists, unrepentant murderers, sociopaths serving life in prison...no shortage of them, as it happens. Let them be the test subjects instead.

reply

WOW, what a FANTASTIC idea!!!!

reply

Maybe you should volunteer to be tested on.

reply

Well dont worry pray to your god so that in the next birth your born as an animal and can get tested and give the mankind a cure for cancer.

reply

No - use murderers and child rapists instead.

reply

Cancer, yes.
HIV/AIDS, no.

And I love animals. Than again I'd be OK with using human testing to cure cancer.

reply

Why would you be okay with curing Cancer but not HIV or AIDS.

reply

Why should one(or many as is the case with animal testing)species of sentient beings have to suffer so that another species can alleviate or eradicate their own suffering? Why is their suffering of less significance than our own? Why should any being be punished for factors that are outwith their own control? You wouldn't advocate testing on people of a different race, gender or sexuality or being of lower intelligence etc so why should it be acceptable for those who also happen to be born of a different species?
And no I wouldn't feel any differently if it was myself or a loved one who was suffering. Suffering and death are an inevitability but sadly the arrogance of human nature makes us think that we are somehow entitled to live forever at the expense of all other life on earth.

The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd.

reply

What if it could alleviate suffering of ALL beings and not just humans?

I am tired. I am...............DEAF!

reply

I agree with gayfbiagentsmecker

reply

I hope that means that you don't use any type of medications or chemicals because human testing had to be done to approve those, and sometimes people suffer. I hope this also means you are against testing of ALL animals including humans.

Considering animals have no compunction against killing other animals for their own benefit, from food to territory, why would I?

reply

What a bunch of lefty idiot on this thread.

All drugs beneficial to humans are tested on animals. Anyone here have diabetes? What do you think that's tested on?!

Stick to your arts degrees and going to you socialist party rallies - where logic ceases to exist

reply

mibseti is not human!

reply

Um I am a democrat and I find these animal lovers to be over the top and ridiculous. The absurd thing is they don't think humans aren't tested for crap too. And what is horrible is a lot of times they do it in poor countries and completely *beep* up the people and scar them for life. But these idiots are worried about a monkey and not a human being who has been taken advantage of because they are poor and live in a *beep* country.
