The apes are much too human

I can suspend my disbelief a great deal. I can accept all the faulty science because without that there would be no film. I can accept that the apes look human and change their psychology once they become very intelligent. But the normal apes were ridiculously human and intelligent. That was way to much to accept and it took away from the film. It would have been much more interesting if they were acting like their actual species.

Ever seen or interacted with apes in real life? Or seen a documentary about them?

Here is a real gorilla being its gorilla self:

reply

Yes actually I study animal behaviour so I spend a lot of time watching them. I am especially intrigued by primates and they're nothing like in the film.

reply

Well ok, then.

To a non-expert like myself, I thought the apes behavior seemed very realistic. Certainly more realistic than Roddy MacDowell in latex makeup, walking like he has a stick up his ass.

reply

That may be but that's a very low bar :P I am aware that animals are always humanised in films and I accept it. In the same way a police officer probably notices a lot of flaws in police films and knows to accept that. But in this film it went to far for my taste because it wasn't suble. Like the communication between Cesar and the apes before they were made super intelligent or the communication he had with the orangutan. Animal minds work very differently and would not communicate like that at all. (Not reffering to the sign language itself, they can be taught that ofcourse but they don't have complex conversations in the way humans do).

reply

But then those ape subtitles are for our benefit, not necessarily a literal translation of the apes exact thoughts.

reply

Even so the communication is much too complex. Even if the subtitles are not literal, what they do communicate (and in all other instances where they don't use sign language) is very human like. Don't get me wrong, it's astonishing what they are capable of doing but it is very different than how an adult human would think and function.

reply

That is why it is called science FICTION besides just because we can't understand apes does not mean they can't understand each other

reply

Of course they can. Just not in the same ways humans do. Like I said, I have no problem with the fiction part or suspending my disbelief if it's to help the story. In this case in my opinion it actually hindered the story. It would have been much more interesting in my opinion to watch them behave like real apes do. At least until they become super intelligent.

reply

Well that explains it.

As former military and an IT geek, welcome to the wonderful world of "it looks okay to a layman, but to someone who knows the field, it's a mess"

I've been in that world for a while. I cringe at pretty much any animal movie. I can also spot almost any animal noise they use for creatures in films which is pretty annoying but accept that it's my curse. I think it's because I expected more from this film that it bothered me so much in this instance.

reply

i thought they didn't get that way until after ceasar exposed them to the miracle drug (i forget it's name).

reply

Are you trying to say you found a plot hole in a movie where apes take over?
