jarring memories

I wonder how many men of various ages and life experiences might get jarred in their memories an incident in which they partook in any way resembling the one in this film.

I suspect many. I thought part of the beauty in this film is in showing you how ordinary the people who commit such acts are: they're not criminals, they're not "devout" homophobes, they're just common men who in a moment of weakness and fear committed a horrible act of betrayal. Then they went on with their lives with all of the people around them none the wiser.
