Why such a low rating? (Questions&Spoilers)

My eyes were GLUED. This was a great movie. I think the ending could have been a bit better though.

Was the dog he followed his dog Duke? There was a "Highway To Heaven" episode where a dead dog showed the way. I don't remember the title of the episode, but I was thinking of the "Highway to Heaven" ep the entire time I was watching the movie.

Was the guy stealing the money from the trunk of the car the same guy he saw in the cat's Den? Was he even real? Or was he just a figment of his imagination?

I dont understand the rating, either. I was honestly more engaged in this film than The Revenant. No pseudo-intellectual flashbacks like Revenant. And I felt Adrien Brody's performance was higher quality as well. But as to your questions, I started watching late and didn't really pay attention at first. Once it got its claws in me, though, I was hooked.
