Season 2 Setup Question

This may have been discussed before but I just started watching the second season and was curious.

Is there an explanation as to how the plot carried over from the first season to the last? I don't want to post any spoilers, but the end of Season 1 seemed to pretty well exclude a Season 2 and had been wrapped up fairly tightly.

Anyone have an answer?

I am watching the second season now, there are few hints towards the beginning of seadon 2 but everything is explained by episode 6.

At the end of the first season, we don't see the butler consume his soul. If you watch the scene again, there are few hinted items that are explained in the second season. It played out well.
