That's the best way he can think of to get away from his tormentors?

There is no "off" position on the genius switch.

I know... especially since the fence was so low he could have easily jumped over it.

And then he would have been in a desert with nowhere to hide, while trying to run faster than a pickup truck.

Climbing the tree seemed an logical step until the lights were switched on.

Yeah this movie's full of things that don't make any sense but are convenient for the plot. That's one of the bigger ones.

Well he did have a the father chasing him in a truck and I'd like to see anyone think clearly when you're in a panicked, traumatized state of mind!

Yeah, because thinking straight, and the bleach they injected with gave him tree climbing abilities, and it's a movie.
