how did he survive with a hole in his head?

I know it is just a movie but how in god's name did he manage to survive with a big gaping hole in his head?

It seems like Lola only went just far enough to open the skull, and not right into the brain, so he could probably have survived anyways had this actually happened. A lot of people practice trepanation, and many have even self-trepanned themselves. I recently watched A Hole in the Head- wild documentary about trepanation.

Not something I would ever want to do, but the whole idea makes a case for the main character's survival in The Loved Ones. Had Lola poured that nice jug full of boiling water in, survival as anything more than a zombie would've been highly unlikely! A nice Jeffrey Dahmer touch by the writer-director.

Even if the drill had went into his brain, it wouldn't have been a guarantee of death for him. If you're going to have a brain injury, damage to the frontal lobe is going to be the place which you're most likely to survive.

Phineas Gage, if you've never heard about him, had a railroad rod shoot through his cheek and out of the top of his head, pretty completely destroying the frontal lobe of his brain. He lived for 12 more years

The brain is a weird thing and a drill to the brain may have killed him and may not have.

Some guy had a nail shot in his brain, didn't even feel it and the doctors were able to pull it out no problem

Assume nothing; Question everything
