Just realized this....

Aaron was 17, making him also technically a minor. He could have had a consensual relationship with Beth. Basically a HS senior dating a freshman.

I would actually think of that as a legal grey area. You can be considered an adult at 17. In 1 - 365 days your relationship would become illegal as fu&*. So I think the movie made the right choice in how to portray their relationship.

I see your point. Just saying it wasnt as egregious as made out to be. I'd like to think she came and found him on her 18th birthday and they got together.

Honestly, when Linda brought in the guy in the middle of the night I would've either chalked her up as just a friend and kept our interactions purely platonic without spending soo much of my time with her, or diverted my attention to her daughter.

17 is three years away from 14 and we do not know when Aaron's birthday or Beth's birthday would be. As others have pointed out sometimes this happens in highschool. Aaron was quite young to be a freshman in highschool at 17. All in all it would've depended on how her mother viewed it and due to her free spirit nature she probably would not have cared much. The road block was mostly the guy.

actually 17 is the age of consent in many states and he could have easily been charged with statutory rape.
there is definitely a major difference in maturity between ages 14 and 17.

If this is based on Jeffrey Fine's life, Brown University is in Rhode Island, according to: http://www.cga.ct.gov/2003/olrdata/jud/rpt/2003-r-0376.htm, He would've been in trouble if he engaged in sexual intercourse with her after he turned 18 and before she turned 16. However, original poster was not advocating a sexual relationship although Beth wanted one, but simply a relationship. Neither am I.

Eh I think they kinda over did it a little bit. I can't see him being THAT turned off by her. I can easily see him refusing her advances, but he did it in such a way you would think he was WAY older than her or something. Besides, 14 and 17 is legal in the US. I do think the movie did a good job of showing him being conflicted about his feelings for her.

I certainly hope it was at Brown, because the age of consent is 18 in MA so the mom would have been the one in trouble if the school had been Harvard. I really think it's stupid that the audience was expected to think it was a big deal for Aaron & Beth to hookup, but not Linda & Aaron when Aaron was still a minor.

realistically...17-14 relations happen ALL THE TIME in this country.....

i mean @ 17 i never placed my self in that kinda situation with a 14 year old....but under the situations in this movie...i can't pretend i woulda been against it either...

i prolly wouldn't even had put much thought into it....

cool movie though

This post is completely pointless for at least one of two reasons:

1. (If) They didn't say what state the school was in, then you don't know what the relevant law is, as anyone with a modicum of a clue should know that the issue is governed by state law; or

2. (If) They did say what state the school was in, you failed to bring up what the applicable law is, which makes the post completely useless.

AARON didn't reject BETH because he thought it was illegal*. It's because by talking to her for 5 seconds anyone could see she was messed up. LINDA too, but it wasn't so obvious with her. When AARON noticed how screwed up LINDA was too, he felt ready to walk away from her. Not to mention that he gives her a speech on how to be a mom.

Yes, the age difference was a factor too, but his age difference with LINDA was even bigger. That shows how hypocrit one can be when one is horny.

*I doubt it was illegal. Otherwise, WES would've AT LEAST asked why AARON and BETH hung around so often.
