Lessons learnt from this movie

What do you think is the moral of the story?

reply

1. Rich people can do many things, due to financial power.

2. Money can solve almost everything.

3. It's miserable being poor.

4. Don't fall in love with your job, or don't be its slave.

reply

The director said it's basically about how far the gap is between upper- and lower-class in Korea.

Other than that you have the rich couple who imitate lifestyles of the rich almost mechanically - they drink wine, play the piano, listen to opera, all facade.

Then there's the kid who shows you can break this cycle of behaviour and attitude.

Maybe more importantly, it shows you will be taken advantage of if you are naive and obedient - perhaps.

That's what I took from it more or less.

Trueism, anywhere really.

The more Ken Loach films I see, the more I think they need English subtitles.

Spoiler alert, please don't read on if you have not seen the movie.

Really? The wife looked a bit crazy or at least disoriented at the end of the movie.

In which film? The 1960 version or the more present adaptation?

The newer version. I thought she looked somewhat aloof?

Dogtown: From what I know the gap between people of different income is much more extreme in Korea, than, say, Germany or even somewhere like Iran.

Everyone looks a bit strange at the very end. It adds to the surreal quality of the movie in that particular scene.

Outdoors furniture, the birthday song, it all adds up very well in the final scene - which the producers didn't want in the movie BTW.

My favorite movie of 2010 : )

The film sounds great. Thanks for letting me in on it. I might have to see it more than once.

UPDATED from my earlier posts to this thread:

Having just seen the film ... I can surmise about the moral of this movie and it is that one has to vet one's hired help very, very cautiously and thoroughly. And, that when the "Help" cheats on the wife, with her Hubby, even if it's at HIS urging (and, it was!) bad karma will come to the Household and the whole lot of its personnel. Everyone seemed to go a bit off the rails, didn't they, after Cho discovered the young housemaid cheating with the husband.

I thought of anothet set of lessons:

1. No matter how bad your character is, if you're a guy with a great body and probably more importantly a lot of money, women will swoon over you.

2. It's important to provide kids with a balanced education. The girl seemed to be the only one with compassion.

3. Watch out for the in-laws, their nosiness will bring you trouble.

4. Always have a fire extinguisher at home. ;)

The cheating husband will get off scot free no matter what.

reply

Don't be a slut... especially if the woman of the man you are cheating with treats you rather kindly before finding out about your looseness.

I did not feel bad at all for the whore with the heart of gold. She deserved everything that was coming to her. I just wish the wife did beat her with the golf club.

Pervert!

The Whore got what she deserved. Glad she burned.

But she was just a cinderella at a wrong place and a wrong time. Ok, maybe a horny one at that, lol....

Don't willingly sleep with you boss and then think they'd be no serious repercussions, and especially don't sleep with a man with a very pregnant wife and then have the gull to expect him to be loyal to you.

Don't be a dumbass, don't think that your wealthy, deceitful, and powerful employers are going to be just peachy with you having an illegitimate heir with stake in their fortune, like hell they're going to let that happen.

Don't overstay your welcome especially if you've been screwing the pregnant mistress's husband and then act all innocent helpless victim like when they threaten you

If your employers watched you trip and hang from a chandelier, didn't try to help you down, and watched you fall two stories---that's a red flag, RUN! Don't pig out on their juice boxes

If the master's child tells you his grandmother pushed you off the balcony RUN! GTFO now!

If you coworker tells you how scary you employers are and that they will do something bad to you RUN! Don't lounge around slurping on their endless supply of your favorite juice box drink and then act all surprised when you start coughing blood

That there appear to be a lot of class problems in South Korea.
Not just that film, but also Parasite, which even won this year's Oscar, show it.
Even that song Gangnam Style from a few years ago is about poking fun at the wealthy class.
