I don't understand the relationship to the pandemic

Did they begin this with no story in mind?

Seems like they just planned to go to USA had have some low-hanging-fruit hijinks with hillbillies and Trump supporters.

They're at a rally with Pence in february before Covid was "big" news. At that point, the pandemic couldn't have been part of the story.

Then it seems they get caught in the South around mid March when the quarantine started, but decided "f*ck it, we'll film anyway with these rednecks/redneck actors in their house." Then somehow they still get to go outside and there are rallies during the pandemic???

Then what? They wait a few months, write the pandemic into the story, and continue in the summer when people were more relaxed? (But by then people were wearing masks... yet they aren't in the scenes very much?)

It seems they wrote the pandemic into the film in the last minute to make it more contemporary. It didn't really need to be there, but it didn't hurt the story either.

The segment with Country Steve made headlines when it happened but obviously none of us knew it wpuld be part of the movie.

Ok, it didn't NEED to be there per se, but what would it be without? Just a story of Borat going to USA with his daughter? Seems REALLY thin as a story.

The main storyline was Borat's attempt to bring a gift to one of Trump's friends. But 'everyone' watches the movie for the pranks, not for the story so it doesn't really matter that much.

That's the brilliance of it. How covid changed their plans and they were able to improvise on that. Who knows what their original third act was. Maybe less funnier?

Perhaps if Baron Cohen adhered to mask-wearing during the filming, he might not have been as recognizable (and not needed all those hastily-filmed cutaway scenes, applying fake beards and noses....which helped highlight how manipulated and 'scripted' this movie was?)

Either way, this movie was really flimsy (plot and content-wise) and I regret saying such

It seems to me the initial draft of the movie was to go along with the gift offering to one of Trump's close allies.
Maybe they tried with Pence and another couple of guys, they got it with Giuliano.

After they had some interesting scenes and reactions, they worked some story around it.

Huh? Those scenes take place in Washington state...
