why Embeth Davidtz character was crying?

reply

maybe her world was crumbling around her because she treated everyone like servants and her star value had diminished

reply

It could have been anything. I thought a little, but we had no clue really. Edie's character wanted to know, Embeth's character was remote and detached, and I stopped caring. Like Edie did.

Besides that, Embeth (I mean the character) was selfish. Why indeed, couldn't she have called a cab? She barely thanked Edie.

It was a good bit of acting.

reply

I kept wondering myself...but the character was too depressed and detached from everyday people.

One thing that bothered me was there was no explanation of why the actress didn't call a taxi. It was a typical weekday. One thing Long Island has is plenty of town cars or a simple taxi.

The choice of music was totally annoying.

After all that criticism at the Sundance premeire, it's amazing the soundtrack issue was never fully addressed.

I stand by all my first impression comments from Sundance.

"Best Director". My mind still reels.

No explanation was given as to why she was crying. So we are supposed to wonder why. Hah!

I think Edie Falco's character had said that she used to help the owner of the house the actress was staying in, or something like that. So I believe she wanted to be kind to the owner, and to the actress, and had left her a note, probably offering her services. The actress simply took her up on the offer.

I was so glad when Edie stopped caring, and said nothing to her. Now if only we can figure out why Edie started crying, and had no explanation for her family as to why she was crying. This show left me unsatisfied on so many levels.

she obviously didn't stop caring. Maybe she wanted to help somewhat, but mostly she wanted to get closer to a movie star.

The problem in the van was that Falco's character couldn't treat the actress as a regular person.

reply

I agree.

In the car, as soon as Edie's character (Peggy) started to talk a little about herself in an interesting but not too personal way then Embeth's character, the actress, immediately responded by engaging positively. The actress seemed eager to balance things and diminish that creepy thing people do around celebrities that implies - I already know you, but you don't know me - and the fawning, apologetic nervousness that already ensued may have put the actress on edge.

The actress may have tried to reach out to neighborhood folks to be regarded as a person who could call a taxi but why not ask a neighbor if they have the time, and get to know someone better. Almost anything could've happened in between when she asked and when the neighbor, Peggy, arrived. But in the car Peggy spoke on the phone to say that she didn't really have the time, which was a give-away that she should have just said no, but that some other time to get together would be very good. Peggy didn't seem to take into consideration that the actress had already been crying, and it didn't change her agenda much, either.

We don't really need to know why the actress, or anyone else, is sad unless they choose to offer why. Just reaching over to give a gentle squeeze of the hand as they drove straight to the ferry would've done wonders.

What a relief it must be for most professionals to leave their work at the workplace and enjoy their neighborhoods doing neighborly things! How awful to think you could ask a neighbor, or anyone, a question and for them not to think that either yes or no are both equally acceptable and good answers to give.

Edie's character had too many obvious expectations. She just piled it on the actress at the wrong time. I don't think the actress was ungrateful - she did say thank you and meant it. Some folks aren't too receptive to a few important softly spoken words - those people you might hear saying "oh, no no no no no no, it's ok" as Peggy did..... already sending out those weird, bristling vibes.

Peggy may have been crying later because she realized her transparencies that she hadn't been aware of until then, and her part in them becoming exposed.

Someone else mentioned being treated as a 'servant' - how does that work unless it's being encouraged or allowed? Both sides have to make that possible. Giving the person you're with a reason to feel relaxed can allow life to happen as it comes, no matter what, and make the best of those moments going by.

Maybe she had just watched 3 Backyards.

No reason was given. I think they simply wanted the viewers to come up with our own reasons; maybe she and her lover/husband had broken up; or she found out she had cancer; or she lost an important role. They just left it open thinking we'd think it was cool. Well no; it sucked big time. We should have been told something and not left hanging like that. Big disappointment.

I think she was crying to show that her life was not perfect

reply

Probably because she realized she was stuck with Edie Falco for another hour.
