Im confused
I haven't seen the movie but read the synopsis.
Why would a prisoner want to help the daughter of the guy he killed? Did he murder the guy or was it an accident?

As it turns out, it seems that he ended up killing the guy due to self defence. The wife of the guy killed got him out on parole so that he could pay for the girl's operation. At the start of the movie he says that there isn't a day that goes by that he isn't thinking about the guy he killed.
She looked rough, suggests her husband was a bit of a knock-about. Later on in the film she acknowledges it was self-defence when she sees how hard Steve Austin's character is trying.
