is this real?

i know this might be stupid but my mother just watched someone get eaten by a kimono dragon in austraila and swears its real. it cant be right? (shes kind of upset).

reply

No,tell Mom it's not real.As it says in the beginning of the show these stories are inspired,INSPIRED,by tales of unknown creatures.I watched it last night and I can see where people may think it's real due to the footage like your Mom saw,but it's just a half hour fictional account made to look real and is interspersed with factoids about the unknown creature.Komodos have been known to attack people, but what she saw was fictional.

reply

That wasn't a Kimodo Dragon, it was supposed to be a "hidden creature", a different kind of lizard/dragon.

I've heard they're real videos, and then I've heard that they're fake, so I really don't know. There was a point in time when AP said that they were real.

reply

I just assume it's fake due to the bad acting :p

I think they are fake too, but something still confuses me. I loved the show when I thought they were real, but doubted it, so I watched them on animalplanet.com/losttapes. I understand that they say the stories are inspired by the fact that these creatures may exist, but I was under the impression they were just talking about the monster, and the facts they tell us about the monster. Sort of filling in the blank for the things in the video we cant see. They say "These are their real tapes" I believe, which is odd because they are obviously re-enactments. I took a broadcasting class and was taught that it is illegal for them to claim something is real on tv, and it not be. You would aslo think they would write DRAMATIZATION in the bottom corner of the screen or something. They dont do that either!

Its a good show, but the people on it are all attractive (for the most part), and though they do cuss, they look and act too much like they are in a horror movie. Not real life. If they were real, i'd imagine some of them would be ugly and fat like the real world :)

reply

I just watched the Devil Dragon episode, never seen an episode and after the fact we do have tapes of deaths by animals for example Timothy Treadwill. Plus the fact it was shot in first person I thought it was real.

Then I watched Big Foot and came here and saw Bill Oberst Jr. played the poacher. See I saw the woman and thought well she's famous so maybe she'd have a page but the poacher?

I find the show confusing, too, so I just take it on entertainment value and enjoy the tidbits of info they provide (usually as text on the screen). I think if Animal Planet hadn't done that dragon (Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real) show a while back, more people would believe this was somehow true.

reply

Nope. Its stated during each segment that they are inspired by accounts and legends. Simmilar to the original Dragnet. Each episode was taken from actual accounts and such.

Check out Blair Witch or Ghostwatch for simmilar "live event" sort of movies.

komodo dragons are carnivorous and have known to attack humans/eat

Komodo Dragons do not live in Australia, except in zoos.

then why do they all have tapes?

Because that is the way the show is made. They try to make it look real but the acting in the show is pure fail. I have seen better acting in kindergarten plays!

wouldnt that be documented evidence?
You mean like the documented evidence shown in The Matrix or Star Wars? Or the documentary evidence that of Bigfoot from August?

Seriously, people, get real. This program is nothing but a pile of rubbish and a complete waste of money. How it got so many tens I can only speculate at *COUGH* production company shills *COUGH*. I am truly staggered that people actually think this show is real.

reply

The fact that this even has to be explained so thoroughly is simultaneously hilarious and depressing. PT Barnum would be a multibillionaire today.

Well, that might explain why so many people vote Republican or watch Fox "News."

I'm still laughing at the notion of a kimono-wearing dragon.

Each episodes begins with the statement this following is premised on the idea that the creature in question is real. Everything that follows that statement is fiction, INCLUDING the "actual footage" claims. It's like a fictional character testifying in a fictional trial. The fictional character swears "to tell the truth the whole truth"-- that does remove the ensuing testimony from being fiction.
So are we all clear? LOST TAPES has a thin candy coating of "This is a fictional show" surrounding a deliciously faked "Reality TV" center.

reply

The problem with this show as seen on Animal Planet is that it is flatly stated that what you are watching are actual real life videos of the events portrayed. The idea being that these are "lost" tapes of actual events. In the intro it says flat out "This is real". Animal Planet should be ashamed of themselves. Altough most viewers will recognize early on that these videos are staged, some viewers won't and be thus be taken in. And since many of the scenes portray violence and even killings, the less sophisticated viewers such as children who can't tell that that these are fake videos could be traumatized. Very irresponsible of Animal Planet.

And that's where parental supervision should kick in. Especially at the hour it's broadcast. Please. Dark Shadows was traumatizing to a whole generation and they got over it.

This sort of thing has been going on since Orson Welles did his famous War of the Worlds broadcast and probably before. How anyone could be fooled by this program post-Blair Witch Project, post-Cloverfield, post-Diary of the Dead, post-Quarantine, post-District 9 is just staggering to me. You can even add the new release Paranormal Activity to the long list.

P.T. Barnum's statement still stands today.

Freakosity is a very vast subject.

Just for the record, there was a (now extinct, or is it?) giant komodo lizard in Australia called Megalania. I believe this is the creature reffered to in the episode.

I haven't seen that one yet.

reply

their is just an real animal as a komono dragon

reply

This show is just Found Footage horror shorts! They must not suck, since people are asking if it were real or not.
Either that or people are just stupid. xD
But most of creatures in this show, did once exist. The "Mysterious Creature" that the one lad said is a Megalania. An extinct MONSTER of a Monitor Lizard that lived in Australia during the Pleistocene epoch.
It USED to live, but the species is now gone due to the massive amount of Tribal Hunting.

But it's not real.. not at all. :)
