Goofy lake monster was funny though

SPOILERS

I can disagree with other viewers that the lake monster was a goofy version of the Creature from the black lagoon. But it was worth laughing at just the same. It seemed to me to resemble the funny-looking Japanese creature monster movies from the 1960s.

I think the director was playing a joke on all of us.

After several revealing shots of the beastie I half expected the script to reveal a Scooby Doo ending and show that it was someone in a suit pretending to be a monster but the whole thing was played dead serious.
