Was There Another Documentary On This Subject?

When "The Cove" was released, I recall another film on the same subject being released at almost the same time. One reviewer even compared the two films and believed the other to be more effective as a documentary as it was apparently more "objective" than "The Cove" (whatever that might mean in this context). Unfortunately, I forgot the title and now cannot find it. Was there another film of this sort and if so, does anyone recall the title?

I also vaguely recall a TV show ("That's Incredible"?) of some decades ago showing a similar dolphin slaughter, though I do not know whether it was in Japan. The filmmakers in that case had no difficulty getting their footage and no need to resort to "Mission Impossible" techniques as in "The Cove" (mind, "The Cove" mentions another Japanese city which once did the same thing and now has no dolphins). Does anyone else recall this?

It is worth noting that dolphins are routinely slaughtered in several locations other than Taiji, Japan. It does seem strange indeed that Taiji goes to such great lengths to hide their activities when the same barbarity is practiced elsewhere with no apparent qualms or public outcry. "The Cove" may well have targeted one location among many where matters may well continue without notice.

There was a anti captivity dvd documantery called Fall from Freedom that came out a few years before The Cove. I posted the taiji bits on youtube here.

Its shocking how heavily involved Seaworld were, they basically started the Taiji slaughters - they dont mention that when you go there do they!

I also have a VHS tape called 'Dolphin Stories Vol 2, that has some footage of it.

(both avalible from Amazon)

Your right slaughters also take place in Denmark, here is a good article on one of the best anti cap websites

Dolphin slaughter sadly takes place in several countries. However, The Cove targets Taiji because it profiles itself as the 'dolphin capital' of Japan, displaying dolphin museums and such, while at the same time going to great lengths to hide the barbarity of it all. Such hypocrisy rightfully makes Taiji the #1 target of this movie.

Thanks folks for the information--for some reason I cannot rid myself of the feeling that I heard about another documentary released at the same time and also dealing entirely with dolphin slaughter. Perhaps just my old brain playing games with itself.

I would like to correct myself on one point. The earlier film of dolphin slaughter that I mentioned was almost certainly taken on Iki Island, Japan c. 1979. That film was aired by CBS News and others and there are several discussions of it elsewhere online. In that case, the fishermen welcomed film crews and claimed that they were killing dolphins as they believed dolphins were responsible for decreasing fish catches. Iki is mentioned in "The Cove"--apparently there are no longer any dolphins near there. Whether because of the mass killings or changed migratory patterns is unknown.

Having seen "The Cove", I would love to see a companion/backstory documentary focusing specifically on the career of Ric O'Barry and his transition from trainer to activist. There are many references to it in "The Cove", but I think the entire story would be interesting indeed and touch on a number of wildlife concerns in addition to Taiji.
