Could people reccomend any other great Australian Films?

I'm an Australian myself and for the past 8 months or so have been getting into some Australian films.
So far the films I like from Aus are,
Animal Kingdom- Last Train To Freo- The Interview- SnowTown- Beautiful Kate- I Am Bish- The Black Baloon- Proof-Pricella Queen of the Desert- Wolf Creek- Chopper and The Loved Ones.
Could people reccomend any others?
I'm not a fan of Coffin Rock, The Monkeys Mask- Undead-Jindabyne- Australia-

Thanks

The Proposition.
Noise.

The Rover looks really promising as well.

reply

Totally forgot about The Proposition and Noise, I liked the Proposition but I haven't finished Noise.
I'm checking out Van Diemen's Land and 'X' tonight.
Yeah The Rover should be good hopefully, though Robert Pattinson...
Mystery Road should be alright, a new one coming out soon.

Thanks for the requests.

Noise isn't great, it's good though. I think I liked it more since I could relate to it.

Edit: I forgot to mention Beautiful Kate.

Haven't seen Van Diemen's Land or X. I'll add them to my watchlist. Let me know how they are.

About Pattinson, yeah I thought the same thing. However, considering how highly Michôd has spoken of him I'm looking forward to seeing how he goes. He's going to have a Texan accent in it for some reason. That should be interesting

Mystery Road was on ABC the other night actually, which is strange considering the DVD isn't out yet. I liked it, but I missed a fair bit so I'll have to watch it again. It's on primewire if you're interested.

As for upcoming films: Felony looks interesting. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2402603/?ref_=nv_sr_1 It's apparently out around May/June this year.

Wolf Creek 2 looks like sh!t from the clips I've seen.

On the fence about this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2268458/?ref_=nv_sr_1

I can't think of any other upcoming films at the moment.

I still need to check out Lantana and Wake In Fright.

Noise dragged a bit but yeah it wasn't too bad.

I haven't watched X yet. Van Diemens Land was quite good, alot of people would call it slow and boring but it was powerful. The only ptoblem I really had with it was that it dragged for too long. The opening is just amazing.

I don't really mind the guy but his hype doesn't help him, Water For Elephants wasn't bad with him in it.

Really? weird of them. I have a tv but no channels xD I watch alot of movies and game if I use my tv haha.

Felony does look alright.

oOh yes I nearly forgot that. Should have left it alone, i liked the first one enough, at least it's by the same Director and has the same actor.

Not for Australia but so many good looking films are coming out or are out this year. I'm looking forward to Filth, American Hustle, Prisoners, Out of The Furnace, The Counciler, Don John, Rush amongst others.

reply

Prisoners was fantastic. The Counsellor was pretty bad. Haven't seen any of the others yet.

reply

Check out The Square. Edgerton brothers. Really good noir flick. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

reply

Why haven't anyone mentioned Bad Boy Bubby (1993)???

Best Aussie flick ever!

I understand that.

This film is definitely not for everyone.
I do not particularly enjoy watching defenseless animals being taken advantage of in any form myself. I just don't think it's fair to judge the whole film based upon that. Especially since there was no harm done to the cat.
If you dislike the rest of the film, it's just a matter of whatever floats your boat I guess.

Here's some information that might make the cat scenes a little less difficult to swallow:

"The film’s most controversial aspect was not its depiction of cruelty towards a human, but the depiction of cruelty towards the cat. When the film was released in Italy, a coalition of animal rights groups tried to set up a boycott of Australian products, alleging that the cat was tortured and smothered in the film. Director Rolf de Heer has said that none of that is true; the cat scenes were carefully filmed, with a veterinarian and animal cruelty inspector on set. Nicholas Hope, in an on-stage interview included on the dvd of the film, says there were two cats, one of which became a pet of a crew member. The other was a feral cat that was put down by a vet after filming (as with most feral cats that are caught in Australia)."

I thought the movie was hilarious, deep, sad, disgusting, gritty and absolutely remarkable. Probably on my top 10 of all time.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Muriel's Wedding, Strictly Ballroom = the golden age of Australian eccentricity films. They all had that same actor too. I forget his name, but he was great (Dad in Muriel, the mechanic in Priscilla). Look up that guy. He died not long ago, but he was in other great Aussie films. [edit: Actor's name was Bill Hunter. He died in '11 :-( Great actor.]

Saw "Adore" which was good. Odd, but good. Some of the actors from AK are in that too.

Memento is brilliant. Not sure if it's Australian produced but Guy Pearce is in it.

I love the film "The Dish". One of my favorites. Not like AK, but has that Aussie charm.

I liked the ones above plus a lot of others. Off the top of my head there was a New Zealand movie "The Hunter" with Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill. Also an oldie "The Effiency Expert" with Russell Crowe, Toni Collette and Anthony Hopkins. You can get them through Netflix or Ebay.

I don't know everything. Neither do you.

In no particular order:

Snowtown Murders (beyond gritty; makes AK look like a comedy. glad I watched on an empty stomach...seriously)

Wish You Were Here

The Square

The Hard Word (classic 'Ozploitation' w/ great Aussie cast of Guy Pearce, Rachel Griffith, Joel Edgerton)

First Snow (another Guy Pearce film, about a B-)

Separation City (New Zealand romantic dramedy...not my favorite genre, but Joel Edgerton sucked me in. Definitely more realistic, less Hollywood approach to love messes)

...there was a New Zealand movie "The Hunter"

'The Hunter' is not a Kiwi film, it's Australian...

I just wanted to thank you and the other folks that contributed to the thread. I LOVE Australian cinema. I've seen several of the films mentioned but now I've got tons more to watch. Oh, and Wolf Creek 2 is not so bad considering the audience that is intended to watch it. For a 'shlasher' sequel, it certainly could have been a lot worse.

reply

Haven't read the whole thread so I would recommend The Hunter.

They used a lot of local people in "the Hunter." There is a confrontation between loggers and environmentalists in the movie. Many of them were the real thing and there was concerns they might actually go at it for real.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

Maybe this is stating the obvious, but "The Road Warrior" (Mad Max 2) was a great film. And I would also add "Gallipoli" to the list of great Australian films.

There are a lot of really good ones! Off the top of my head:
Bad Boy Bubby
The Tracker
Ten Canoes
Satellite Boy
Mystery Road
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Wake in Fright
Walkabout
100 Bloody Acres
Ghosts... Of The Civil Dead (mostly, just because, Nick Cave)
The Proposition
The Piano (co-production with New Zealand and a few other countries)
Sweetie
Holy Smoke!
One Night the Moon
Mary and Max
The Reef
Red Dog
Samson and Delilah
Beneath Clouds

There is one coming out soon called The Darkside which I'm really looking forward to as well. Hope that helps!
