Other movies where a main character dies early [SPOILERS]

So Joel Edgerton's character dies rather suddenly maybe 20 minutes into the film, after being set up as the main character or some kind of protagonist. Can anybody think of other movies where this happens and the film shifts focus? I don't just mean a main character died by the end, but in the middle of the story.

The most obvious one is Psycho.

No *beep* for old men maybe?

I was really surprised when Guy Pearce's character died at the beginning of The Hurt Locker. It was even sooner than in this one, maybe less than 10 minutes in.

Samuel L. Jackson in Deep Blue Sea is humourously disposed of seconds after establishing his alpha-male, "man with a plan" badassness.

They were nowhere near the main characters and were never billed as the main characters. They were pure supporting roles. Everyone and their mother knew Clive Owen was the top dog in that movie.

Maybe not the main character, but probably the main reason most people watched this movie, since he's the biggest star. I was disappointed when they offed him so quick. I was like 'Dammit, who's going to carry this thing now? Ben Mendelsohn and...the actress who plays Smurf, I guess. *beep* me.'

Yeah the OP would have been better off saying famous actor... if the main character gets killed off early then they're not really the 'main' character are they.

Steven Segal in Executive Decision. At least at the time when he was a major action star.

Obviously there's no more shocking star death in the history of cinema than Steven Seagal in Executive Decision.
